Has anyone done this before? I am desperate to remove the standard Airbag type steering wheel on my ST205 and replace it with an aftermarket item. please help!!!

Not sure what your laws are but here in nz you cant remove and replace a airbaged wheel as its a saftey feature. Unless you replace it with a aftermarket airbag wheel.. But they cost thousands.

You won't get a warrant if you remove the airbag steering wheel.

And you'll probably set it off if you start fiddling with it aswell...

there should be some little plastic covers on the side of the steering wheel, remove them and there should be some screws that take a star shaped bit. undo these and the centre of the steering wheel should lift off(this will remove the bag and all). remember to be carefull as electic shock and vibration can set off the bag. and there are pics floating on the net of people with screw drivers thru there nrcks and heads from bags that have gone off.
dont damage it as you may want to reinstall for its next wof.

they have a road worthy test that only gets done when the car changes hands

but cops can defect you for heaps of stupid stuff

Just be incredibly careful doing it, the propellant charges in those things can do similar damage to a shotgun shell going off

assuming the air bag is wired much the same as a sw20

the wiring stands out, there was a plug farther down the steering colum, unplug it (isolating the bag then remove as described) and you are good to go .....

i always wondered about this paranioa about vibrations setting them off im sure they dont, but i can say with some fond memories, that some wire and a 9 volt battery does

testing a live bag with a multi meter doest set them off, so a voltage some where between 9 v and a tiny bit triggers the sucker.

and yep you better beleive it can do some damage if it went off at teh wrong time/place so take care..

i let off a starlet one, and from that time on have never been a fan of airbags (i never want that thing to go off in my face), considering how much they cost id rather have a 6 point harness........

most of the newer cars I have worked on have all soft pink wiring for Airbags, not sure if it is the same on all cars, but all the ones I have played with have been after 2000.

If the ST205 in question is australian spec you may find it has no wiring, mine doesn't.

How do mechanical ones work?...cant say its something Ive taken apart to look at. I'd assume if fully mechanical it would be the colum collapsing causing the trigger?

Mechanical one's have a ball inside i think, that moves under a certain amount of force, which triggers a pin that reacts with the propellant somehow that inflates the bag.

In my opinion i wouldn't go near it cos the bag flies out at 300kph or something ridiculous. Only reason it saves you in an accident is the fact that your wearing a seatbelt as well.

Don't believe what you see in the movies either lol where they get a nice pillow to take the impact :roll:

Well, I think they improve the chances of surviving over just a seatbelt a bit...
but yea, its not a soft cushion, its gona hurt you...just not kill you (usually)

The bags work with the seatbelt, if you're not going to wear a seatbelt then you're safer not having the airbag also... apparently

The mechanical type airbags are completely enclosed in the steering wheel and have no wiring like the electronic ones. The trigger mechanism is also inside the steering wheel unit and the crash releases a spring loaded pin which basically starts of the whole airbag system.
