Insurance.....

Postby Levin » Thu Feb 02, 2006 10:06 pm

Hey, just interested to know what insurance people have? (what company and how much its costs) And what age you are and what car your driving?

I'm 17 with a ST185 GT Four, I'm insured with state insurance (third party, but its soon to be third party with theft and fire, as soon as i get an alarm). And it costs about $220 a year.

Just interested to know :)

I've got full cover for $82 a month, because I have my insurance through Lumleys which is where my olds have theirs. Was $117/month but it dropped once I turned 21, and I've only got a 1600cc non-turbo.

Have you looked in to a quote from AMI ? I found that when first looking in to insurance State actually worked out to be the most expensive.

Best advice, pick up the yellow pages, do some ringing around, you will soon get the feel if your being ripped off 8)

Insurance companies are an ass.

You need to get the right person at the company, not the right company.

I had my Evo 1 insured with AMI and rung up and got my girlfriend named as an under 25 driver, easy as.

She rung AMI up to get me listed on her std AE92 FXGT and they said no because i was under 25 and it was a performace vehicle???

I rung back and talked to to the same person I was talking to and it became not a problem.

Yup very true, im with AMI, the manager at Papakura branch said no to me lowering my KE30 at all, and doing any mods to it. The manager at AMI botany has insured it covering all the mods listed in my profile. Major difference.

I rang 5 different companies and the only one that didn't laugh at me was NAC!

Im with state and have been for almost 10 years now

i pay $16.75 a fortnight for full cover on my new car - 1996 mitzi mirage vrx (turbo) , $27.91 a fortnight for a 1996 Mitzi legnum VR4 (turbo again)
The reason the legnum is higher is my partner is the main driver of that car.

I was paying $15 odd a fortnight for a 1997 Celica which had a 3SFE.

i guess im pretty lucky as state were questioning as to if they were going to insure the mirage (even tho i had a legnum which has more power already insured)

I agree, in my experience working directly with a major company is a an enormous waste of time, when I first went to insure my Curren I rang up State, and the woman there said sure, no worries. I did some ringing around but State was the cheapest so I rang them back and got a different guy and he said no because it was a "high risk vehicle"!!. He then checked with his manager who also said no.

In addition, trying to claim from state it is absolutely hopeless, they don't keep anything on record, and since each time you ring you get a different person, you have to re-tell the story every time! They kept ringing me up trying to get information I had already told them, in the end we told them to leave us alone and we shifted all our insurance.

Currently I am insured through a seperate broking firm which uses AMP, and that makes things much simpler as you always liase(sp?) with the same person so they always know what you are on about. Costs me around $600/yr for third party fire and theft on my 96 Supra and I'm 20. Having my contents insurance and a record under my own name for a few years certainly helped, I tried to get quotes at other places but they pretty much didn't want to hear a word of it, or would only offer full cover at something like $1700/yr.

I did get a few quotes for my GT Four, but state worked out the best. I originally rang the customer services helpline (state) and the nice Indian lady very nicely told me, "Hell no!". I then went into my local state branch (whakatane) and they were much more helpful, very friendly and happy to help out. I think I'm very lucky to have insurance with state at my age with a GT Four though.

yep i rung them the other day 4 times and got indians. not that im about to be rasist or anything but it was really hard to understand them and they kept twisting my words to try and catch me if i was saying anything. how much more simplier can a standard car be?

the first lady told me no worries at all
the first guy told me no way, hung up on me
Second lady said she would have to talk to the manager
third lady was on a coffee high i think and told me after spending 10 mins on the ph to the manager that it was fine however if i am to do any modifications to the car i was to ring and tell them as changing my exhaust can dramatically increase the power which means you are more likely to crash! Then she asked me if there was a turbo timer and what it did.....

hmmmmm

Is anyone here under 25 with a quite modified car (body kit, lowered and rims) who can still get insurance?

AMI and state both refuse to insure me at all (even through my mother) because i have more than 20% modifications on my car (just mags atm).. I am looking at getting a body kit put on soon and getting my car lowered.. i dont know what im going to do about insurance.

Toyspeed should start an insurance company!

Yep there is no consistancy with insurance companies in NZ at all, each employee has conflicting opinions from other employees in the same company! Basically if your young and have a modded car chances are your more than likely going to get screwed, and they can get away with it because we have no other option. And I have found if you are under 25 and even try to insure a fuel injected car through AMI you will get denied 8O

Its not all bad though, insurance is cheap in NZ compared with say Australia for example.

Im with NAC and pay $700 pa which I think is pretty reasonable, the excess of $1200 x 2 is crazy though.

My insurance company didn't care about mags, bodykit, lowering, tints or stereo.. but went through a broker who deals with AMP and Vero instead of dealing with the insurance company directly..mind you I don't think it adds up to 20% value of the car

I don't think so. I liase with State regularly, they wouldn't even insure me when I was 18 for a KP60 starlet with tridents. I had a full, clean licence too.

If you can't get insurance anywhere else, go to National Auto Club...
