250hp n/a 4AGE? Erm? are you sure

For those of you who can't link trade me

Datsun 1200 4Door sedan, Full cuircut car has touring car cage 2004. 2 Momo black bucket seats, to race harnesses, tread plate dash with 5Inch taco, Sports stering wheel and bosket,(new). new 4age motor with 45 mil sidedrafts, inlet ports have been raised up,TRD stainless steel valves,TRD cams, adjustable cam wheels, Port and polish,Custom headers,extensive bottom end work.
Car has also been fully seam welded, alloy drop tank, Holly black fuel pump, 5 Speed gearbox, Hr 30 Skyline struts, Roadstar Diff with panhard rod,new koni shocks all round, nolathane rubbers,Flaired gaurds, 13 inch hot wire mags with slick tyres, New k&n air filters, Fresh Paint, car is over all tidy and runs mint as has just been on dyno.

How?

I've seen this car briefly, and while it's pretty decent looking, well it had enough issues that it wasn't allowed to run at a Dual Car Sprint, because somebody had tried building a car without knowing the motorsport rule book.

Buuuuuuut 250hp at the wheels, with the listed mods ... that's well over Formula Atlantic HP ratings isn't it? [Paging Mr Bruce Sollit]

well, without seeing any dyno results its hard to believe..but it could be possible...

shouldnt doubt until proof is given...

I can't believe I'm seeing any of that wing, what were they thinking ruining classic lines with a wing like that. Maybe that's were it gets a 100 odd hp from.

well i belive it i've been talking to performance place and they say its very poss, i'm lookin at 200hp out of mine and they say not a problem very easy

250hp ... from a 1600, without spending a billion dollars?

Awfully big difference between 200 and 250hp. Rather bigger than the difference between 100 and 150.

200hp at the wheels or flywheel?

and the guy must really want to sell that car, wont get pics of the engine bay cos its in storage... :?

Well, a formula atlantic 4AGE makes about 240hp at the flywheel. Of course, that is a bloody expensive engine, although if you had a good engine builder you could posibly replicate that sort of power. However an untuned 250 at the wheels sounds like a bit of a tall tale.

Total and utter bollocks.

Formula Atlantic engines are about 240hp at the flywheel on carbies. And that is one very very peaky engine.

My 4age, which appears to have considerably more work than his engine, develops 177.5hp at the wheels. I could believe 220 hp at the rear wheels in a Formula only engine, with a tonne of money thrown at it. But 250hp? Yeah righto! Thats one screwed up dyno or one mentally disturbed dyno operator.

Just post the dyno plot.

I think you'll find it considerably more costly and harder than you could imagine. My budget engine owes me about 8k (thats scrimping on everything) and develops 177.5hp at the wheels. Another 22.5hp should cost you in the mid 15k mark.

You could always buy a second hand formula atlantic engine (12k US), rebuild it from scratch (It'll need it. Possibly another 7000 odd NZ) and get yourself 210-220 at the wheels. Still it would be slower than your average Skoda for around town running.

If that had 250hp at the wheels it'd be completely undriveable on the street. Formula Atlantics put out about 240 at the crank, and that's by revving the crap out of them.

The seller is probably relying on that old adage "there's one born every minute", or maybe he was one of those... hmmm I wonder if he'd be interested in a one owner, low mileage bridge, there's one in Auckland I'd like to sell :twisted:

They would be pretty much useless for anything but circut use, even in a targa it would be shit cause you would get no drive out of the corners unless somehow you could hold the motor above 7000rpm constantly.

You probably won't get a sensible reply.

It's a Schedule A cage, I've seen the paperwork funnily enough (which means it complies with basically every rule for cages in most classes of racing in NZ), as there isn't any such thing as a Touring Car Cage ... he pulled that one out of his arse.

However, it is a Timo Lloyd (Octane Automotive) cage, so is an extremely nice bit of work :) A very good cage.

Leon, Redmist & fivebob have pretty much summed it up.
I must say though it's quite amazing how many customers actually quote these sort of power figures when they contact us. Some of them are quite senior competitors.
