I have always been told to not take a car into redline and today I was wondering what actually happens if you do?

Is the damage instant as well? Cheers

We did an 'experiment' a few years back.

A 20ish year old SR coupe (with 250,000kms on the clock) took about 20 minutes of bouncing off the rev limiter, before it died.

And it didnt have any oil in it.

Having a more modern car up near the higher end of the RPM spectrum for a second or two isnt going to make your car implode.

If it is a performance car, it will be built to handle the high RPMs.

If it isnt, it is unlikely that it will be making power in the high RPMs anyway, so there is no point.

lol the effects from redlinning are slow, obviously there is increased engine wear(minor) at red line and things are starting to struggle to keep up but in a well built/tuned engine taking it to redline wont have the effects that i think you have been informed that it does!

In the case of the 4age on a combustion down stroke 4 tonnes of preasure is excerted on the cranck but the engine is made to handle this, its just in the long run the smaller parts like bearings and caps, valves etc etc will be prone to wear but with regular oil changes and good maintenance the engine will operate fine at red line.

did SR coupes have Limiters? Or was it a mechanical limiter? ie when the valves cant go any faster

If you're meaning bouncing off the redline, then thats usually an ECo controlled fuel cut. Which is bad for EFI cars.

In carb'd cars, the fuel is still being supplied, the engine just can't rotate any faster.

Haha off topic but on friday night I saw this guy talking to someone in a wrx and he said

"Do you wanna take on someone? Theres this dude with an MR2, y'know a Mazda mr2 thats fast as!" Sees a car "reckon you could beat this... RX7?" .... Mk3 supra drives past....

Then he asked the guy if his WRX pulls pussy... but the dude was married....

Seeing those sorts of people in town is good for a laugh.

Bahahaha some dude rolled up to me in my wags the other day and was like "hey man whats in your bluebird?" possibly he was confused due to my car being blue....

Thats awesome guys cheers. Yeah some guy said that as soon as you hit redline the engine explodes but I didnt think it did, and it obviously doesn't.

one way to find out is blast it throught the gears and see how it goes! and take your mate so you can be like " you talk shit mate!" then shout him a round of rev limiting!

Redlining when cold is bad mkay.

Taking a car to the Redline in general, just puts loads of stress on the engine, gearbox, driveshafts etc etc etc. If you do it heaps, just expect the wear & tear on your car to be a bit worse than if you drove it normally.

Equally, not reving a car hard enough is bad, and your engine will similarly wear out a bit quicker.

I always take my car into pretty high revs every weekend going to work cause I have to travel about 75kms of hilly stuff and like to get up the hills quickly.

So are you saying this is good for the engine every so often aye? if thats the case-awesome

Maybe he was talking about the new XR6 engine?

When they run on the limiter or a bad enough missfire under load,

the sharp accel and decel of the crank vibrates the oil pump drive that is around the crank,
and then
they crack and split open and they loose oil pressure,
and then
they spilt the oil pump housing,
and then
the cam chain tensioner falls off, ( because it is mounted on the housing)
and then
the cam chain comes off,
and thenyou bend most of the valves and destroy the head and pistons.

Moral of the story dont run them on the limiter, or with missfire traction control.
