SW20... removing AC condensor?

Postby RomanV » Wed Feb 08, 2006 9:24 am

Hi folks.

While my car is off the road, it is getting a bit of an overhaul, with any unnecessary crap being removed. (Punch in the head for anyone that says 'what about the driver')

Part of this, is that I want to remove the AC condensor unit that is behind the dash. (as it is the only part of the AC remaining in my car.) Has anyone done this before? I hear that it is a bit of a PITA. My interior will be coming almost completely to bits regardless, so it isnt a huge drama there.

How much of a PITA is it to get out, and what does it involve? I hear that it may not be possible to keep the heater?

There are many things that I can live without, but the heater in my car is not one of them. :)

Any comments appreciated.

EDIT: Perhaps what I'm talking about isnt the 'condensor', but generally the AC stuff that is behind the dash.

I don't know if SW20 is the same, but in my ST165 I removed the AC condenser, it takes about 15 min to do it. It is behid the glove box (you will have to remove it), it sits inbetween the fan and the heater core in plastic housing, held by 4 nuts, it should come out without splitting the housing apart. Don't forget to disconnect all the plugs from AC control unit and bunch of relays and boxes sitting on the housing.
When you have the housing out split it, there are ~4 phillips screws and ~4 springs holding it together, chuck out the core just leave the AC control box and temp sensor inside, as your temperature control might not work (anyway it weights nothing). Don't forget to cover the holes with some aluminium or atleast duct tape.

its acutully the evaporator, the condensor is the thing that looks like a radiator at the front of the car, its just a small alloy cube really,

just beasicly pull it out its a seprate unit to the heater core
