haven't used them, but done quite a bit of enquiring in the past to people that have. What are you wanting to find out anyway?

well, that happens to be exactly what I was finding out about.

Where are you located in Aucks? I used to talk to the guys at LJ Smits in East Tamaki, they are HOK's importers. Anyway the main advice I got was to make sure you give an equal number of coats to everything, be careful not to overlap too much in the same spot or you'll get uneven colouring over the car. Also you really want to use a reasonably light basecoat, like white or silver, as black and other dark colours give you quite a dull candy effect. Also the HOK website has some pretty good info on application techniques etc

yep thats where i have been (have alwasys gone there for great advice great products and least of all great prices!)

was talking to a maori guy( black guy not to sure on nationality) but he gave me some good ideeas, at this stage i had no idea on how the candy effect was acchieved or anything

but what im going to go for is :

Primer
White base coat
Colour
KANDY
then about 8 coats of laquer sanding down with 2000grit in between coat 3 and 5
and then cut and polish after about a week,

is this correct to your understanding ?

the kandy effect is basically achieved by many layers of semi-transparent paint (that's the kandy). What basically happens (afaik) is that depending on the angle that the sunlight passes through and reflects on, you either see more of the basecoat or more of the kandy coat.

What colour are you intending on using as the base? There's probably no point in doing the white basecoat before another colour coat, infact you can even use the primer as the basecoat if it's the desired colour, and just kandy over that.

Also 8 coats of clear might be excessive 8O And I don't know if you meant 2000 grit (rather than 200!), but that might be excessively fine also, 1200 would be plenty and it wont take you so long to sand it!

so the candy is just mixed up the same as the ordinary colour and then applied over the colour that the car should be ..correct :?:

im not to sure on what colour i will do it yet... i actually like the standard black colour

and yeah i did mean 2000 grit ! i prefer to work with the 1600/2000grit to be honest in the past it has ment a finer finish it might take a bit longer but the end result is a better finish i have found

same with the 8 coats, it will probably end up being 6 coats after the sanding to give that super glossy look :) and the final polish will finish it off nicely

some of the hot rods have in excess of 10 coats 8O

if i go ahead with this i will send you through some pictures when its done,

afaik the kandy is mixed/applied very much the same as a clear coat, just taking extra care with getting it on evenly. You can do kandies over black base but all the little swatches LJ Smits had of them looked very dull, you can get quite a dark/blackish colour by doing many coats of kandy over a lighter basecoat, which I think would give you a more pronounced kandy finish in sunlight

Kandy hhhhmmm I had all the Intercooler Piping and Rocker Cover painted in House of Kolor Wild Cherry Kandy very nice and very expensive.. Lucky mate is a Panel Beater/Painter/Air Brusher and done it for nothing just had to pay for the Kandy which brough enough of to do my whole car (that never got done :( ) .. Layed down a Bright Silver Base and had like 2 - 3 even layer's of the Kandy as All_Fours said must be done evenly as it is easy to notice if a spot has move Kandy then another spot.. Alot harder to get something the size of a Car done then something small like Piping but the end result would be well worth it just wish I got round to doing my whole Car before I sold it :( ..

Good Luck

Pic maybe 56K warning

Postby EVL GSXR » Thu Feb 09, 2006 11:14 am

I have got some pic's but the pic's don't actually pic up the full extent of the colour etc.. Just come's across as a maroon like colour when it's not.. In the sun turn's to a blue, purplely pink colour..
You usually use a bright metallic colour as a base as Kandy is just a clear dye so a dull base wouldn't show any sparkle and come across as dull effect making it a waste of time using Kandy.. I'm no painter but would advise going to see someone that use's it on a regular base's for more info..

Pic below but as I said the Camera doesn't pic up it true colour.. Have some Pic's on my home PC so will have alook tonight..
