Camry electrical fault

Postby Camrolla » Sun Feb 12, 2006 1:42 pm

Can anyone out there help me diagnose an obscure electrical fault in a '91 SV21 Camry (3S-FE engine)?

The problem began at about 80k with persistent failure of rear lamp bulbs (stoplight and tail). Only the lamps at the rear of the car were affected. The workshop diagnosed a faulty regulator and fitted a reco'd alternator and ran a new wire from the alternator to the battery. The problem went away - for a while.

The problem recurred at about 120k, and this time the starter motor began to join in the fun - sometimes the starter solenoid would not pull in. The starter motor solenoid was rebuilt with new contacts and the battery was replaced. Back in business - for a while.

Now (at 150k) we have intermittent starting problems again and also intermittent glowing (at varying brightness) of the "bulb failure" lamp on the instrument panel. The bulbs, however, are not blowing.

Anyone had any similar problems? Anyone had problems with the wiring loom in Australian built Camrys from around 1990-1992?

What about a loose engine ground wire, or chassis ground wire?

Thanks Guys,

We will check the grounding.

As for the hungry indigenous person - perhaps we had better take this thread no further in case the Dept of Political Correctness is monitoring this site. (Good idea though - I will call the factory tomorrow and see if anyone went missing in March '91)

(If there is someone stuck under the dash I am tempted to ask for advice on how we might get him out, but that could lead us into very dangerous territory.....)
