Timing????

Postby 20v_rollaboy » Sun Feb 12, 2006 8:01 pm

Ok, so Ive changed my cambelt and my oil pump cover and put everything back and she dont start :(

She turns over and sounds like she wants to start but just wont. I tried not touching the cams while I done all the work but inevitably they had to move. I thought I put then back the same way but probably not.

So can anyone help?? Where in relation to each other other should the little punch marks be??

in every engine ive ever worked on, you line up a straight edge between the centres of the shafts and the dots should line up along that line
Course, thats all SOHC, so probably not applicable here.

Generally in DOHC they have a punch and a notch in the casing which you line up...

Your local library should have a manual, but im sure someone will be along to tell you exactly what you need to know soon enough.

as said, there will be index marks you need to line up- if they are out it could just run poor, not at all, or on some cars that are contact, bend valves.
Cant recall on the last 20v I worked on, but it will be similar to the 16v's, just perhaps a different position.
Although you have done it now, best thing to do when starting is to make sure you are at TDC #1. the crank index mark will line up to an index point on the oil pump housing. The cams will also have index marks which line up with either index marks/pressed marks on the cam cover back plate.
Cant believe im still a member here.
