parallel imported... would you trust it?

Postby Dirtbag » Mon Feb 13, 2006 8:14 pm

I am thinking of buying some audio gear from parallelimported.co.nz and got told by a mate that all the goods they sell was end of lines and that they sound like crap compared to the real deal from a normal retail store? Can anyone shed some light on this?

The stuff im thinking of buying is:
headunit ($265)
http://parallelimported.co.nz/view.php?item=749

still thinking of speakers, what size are the front speakers in ae101 truenos/levins?

Anyhelp would be much appreciated!

It depends what you're buying. They only sell low end gear (other than headunits), so if thats all you want and you dont care less about having zero comeback if they decide not to honor a warranty, nor any chance of repairs out of warranty, go for it.

But normally, you can get gear just as good, new, from a proper retailer... you just have to look around :)

Where should I look? People I know who have bought from retail stores have always had to spend alot more money to get a headunit anything like that one.

Indeed, but try getting it covered if its anything other than an outright unit failure. DeeCee waiting 4 months for his headunit just to get the screen sorted. They cannot get parts, so if theres no replacement units, you're poked.

I've bought speakers off them no problem. When I wanted my headunit though they had it on thier website but not in the store, so I asked and the said they can't find it in stock so will take my details and give me a call. Waited a month and tried again, same story. Eventually gave up and bought one retail.

So I think they are ok if they have what you want in store and you are not after great service.

I actually work at Pauls Audio :)

Do you want/need MP3 playback? Coz i can suggest a good headunit then :)

For around the $200 mark for front speakers, look into some Rainbow Audio SLX-265's. They are entirely handmade in Germany, and sound absolutely fantastic... between them and the Focal 165A's, theres nothing else under $300 that comes close :)

I read somewhere on thier site that it's 3 years if professoinally installed and 1 year if it's done yourself.

Yep thats correct on the hea dunit warranty's. As for getting help, 99% of them are monkeys, however there is one slightly older guy who is very good, and actually is helpfull and knows what hes talking about. If hes busy or not there I dont bother asking anyone else for help.

I have purchased 3 head units, two sets of components and an amp from them all with no troubles. And i reckon i got a reasonable install out of it too :]

I think they are good. I go in there, i know what i want. If i dont i ask the chump and he is able to give me power figures and specs and a bit of advice and im sweet from there.

Didnt like the service at Paul Money, went in there knowing what i want and got car salesmen. Mind you i dont like having pushy sales people.

Correct, but very few 'professional installers' will install PI gear, or at least warrant the install. For instance, we provide a lifetime warranty on all our installs of NZ new gear, but no warranty whatsoever on PI gear, because we have no comeback if anything goes wrong.

Should I come into Pauls Audio sometime and have a talk to you/the others in there? Just looked on your site and no prices damnit!

What was the mp3 headunit you would reccomend for around $300 Blackrazor?

Just spotted the specials on your website, the Pioneer - DEH-P4750MP any good, or those pioneer speakers on special from 299 down to 190, or would you still get the rainbow audios?

Sure, come on by, at least you can see what we offer. And no, we dont have prices on our website normally as we tend to do gear at better prices for clubs than retail anyway, so theres no point :)

The 4750 you mention below :)

The 4750 is our most popular headunit. The Pioneers, for the money, are very good, but they are like most mass-market speakers - reasonable bass but weak midrange and harsh treble. The difference is the Pioneers churn out of a factory in China by the million, whereas all the Rainbow speakers are made by hand in Germany by a company that individually tests each speaker :)

But dont let me tell you that, come and have a listen, you'll hear the difference straight away :P
