Engine Swap Guide

Postby 2LTR Rona » Mon Feb 13, 2006 8:28 pm

Stumbled across this a while ago from an aussie site if i remember right, could be handy for those possibly looking in to engine swaps, do you see any blatant mistakes or anything to add? Possible for FAQ?

Engine Swap Guide
This list is meant to be a guide about what sort of engine conversions are possible for your Toyota. This is neither definative, nor 100% accurate, but rather based on the opinions and experience of members. If you find any errors, please don't hesitate to get in contact with the webmaster. If you are confused with the engine codes, please refer to our Engine Code Guide. Alternatively, if you are confused with the model codes, please refer to our (you guessed it!) Model Code Guide.

If you don't see your favorite engine (ie: 4A-GE, 1JZ-GTE, 22R-TE), please note that in order to keep this guide readable, it was decided to only include the most powerful engine out of every family (therefore 2JZ-GTE instead of 1JZ-GTE and so on).

Some things to consider when doing an engine swap are insurance, legality (check with the LTSA or an engineer), difficulty, weight transfer, brake upgrades, and cost. Some engines are more suitable for swaps than others also.
International readers, please be aware that this guide is based on Australian models. Model numbers/names and years of availability may differ from those of other countries.

Am I to assume that the AE102 Corolla is supposed to be an AE101, and the 102 is a typo?

Nope, the 102 used the 7A 1800cc I believe.

What is this guide supposed to tell you exactly? That you can put any FWD toyota engine into a FWD chassis and likewise with RWD? Seems a little... obvious?

Also seems a bit odd to be saying you can put a 1G or a 1UZ in a KE10, when if you're going to that much trouble then why not list 2JZ?

btw, someone find me a 7K :D

All very valid points, but how many times have there been post on here about "what engine can I put in to my ......." only resulting in the first four or five replies being "use the search" followed by one hundred and one questions from the OP, maybe this is a way to remove some of that and give the OP's more ideas?

To some people yes but to others no, hence some of the questions that get asked and posted

Given the weight of those whales you probably wouldn't, see this as more of a starting point on the thinking path

this guide was printed in zoom a few years back, along with some sort of warning saying that not all these conversions would be bolt in and easy. i think it was just a compilation of transplants that had been done. however some of these swaps would be seriously expensive and/or involve a great deal of fabrication work.

example: the 1uzfe won't go into the pre 77 celica's without changing from pitman arm to rack and pinion steering. as there is no rack available the right width this requires a great deal of fabrication along with a fair bit of knowledge in setting up steering (bump steer, ackerman angle, etc). putting the engine in gearbox in however isn't that much of a major. you don't have to cut the firewall though which you do for the 1/2jzge conversion which might be why this isn't listed.

cheers
Matt

Yes it will.
And yes, it has been done before although I think it was a 2J from memory.

This is true.
You can do anything with an angle grinder and some cable ties.

I haven't done the conversion myself so I don't know exactly what you would need to complete it...

Doing it RWD is easy. Just don't use the transfer case. I'm not sure whether there is something you would need to change to the front axles though?

You'll need custom mounts for the engine and a gearbox xmember. Your standard hilux xmember might need to be modified aswell depending on where the sump on your 1J sits.
