Turbo Black Top Price Up

Postby tomo1985 » Mon Feb 13, 2006 4:01 pm

Before you tell me to search Please read.

I'v been thinking about going turbo. Just did a quick price up and came to a figure of

$7,300.00

This is for

Rods (aftermarket) $1,500
Forgies $1,000
Injectors $500
Mani $600
Intercooler $600
Piping $500
LTX-8 $1,400
Dyno Tune $1000
Fuel Pump $200

Now these are all retail prices so I can prob get it alot cheaper. All I wanna know is what the norm to turbo a 20valve is.

Any help will be great.

Rods : $700ish
Pistons : Bout 800 - 1200, depends on brand
Walbro pump - $295 retail
Injectors - If second hand, bout $200, if new, bout $180 - 200 each. I have a set of 3SGTE injectors at home for $100 if you want them.
Cooler - Try $400 for a 600X300Xmassive jobbie

I can't help but think it would be cheaper in the end to go for a 3SGTE, especially after looking at that!

You also forgot to add in the turbo itself. $2K for a brand new Garrett GT series (or $1600 for a GT25 sized one), bout 1K - 1200 for an evo 4-6 TD05.

Umm, what about all the rebuild bits like gaskets, bearings, rings etc, and new clutch cause i doubt the standard one would last very long

My old flatmate borrowed 10 grand to turbo his silvertop, and didn't even get it half finished. However he has expensive taste, and used some of it to buy momo gear & sounds

I think its not worth doing as it would be cheaper and faster to buy a gt4. Might just keep dreaming

Yup thats how things happen, and why people say to budget generously and double it. There are so many little pieces thats you dont account for that all add up, and things most of the time dont just 'bolt in/on' Get a bit tired of people saying how theyre gunna do such and such and its gunna cost X amount, when theyve never done something similar before, when in reality they dont know what theyre doing and how much its ACTUALLY going to cost. Theres all the bling upgrades ya 'may as well do while its in pieces' - They really sting me.

Well thats my rant.

so has anyone ever turbo'd a 20V and kept a record of how much it cost?

Or is that too scary?

If you can' t afford the initial big $$$, why not do it in bits.

Get 2nd hand T25, VR4 i/c, misc piping, Rising rate fpr and you're away - around $1500 or less? Run it on low boost - 4-5psi.

Sure you'll end up breaking something, but you'll also have a fun car to drive while you're saving, and you were going to replace that bit anyway right?. Plus when it breaks and you fix it you're learning as you go.

I think it's too scary.... Im trying not to count how much my gze/gte conversion is costing, and the next car we are doing is my mates (20v silver). I will keep a record of his car (its not mine so not as scary :P )

how much power you aiming for?

you can use 16v/silvertop rods. and the 4agze pistons.
thatll save you like $1500 from those prices above.

injectors, 3sgte ones will do and u can get those for under $150
say $200 for a gasket set, $260ish for TRD bearings .

also other than the tuning i dont se any labour costs there....

Standard Blacktop is faster than a standard GT4? And the 111 is a much more nimble (and nubile :) ) car.

If you're gonna do it, don't touch the blacktop and turbo a silvertop/gze in your shed where you can take the time to do it right and still have a car that is reliable and fast to get to work.

engine stand is about $120 on Tardme
GZE has got to save you some money, you can bolt on a turbo and run 10lbs+ straight away.

buying a GZE is the more exspensive way..... they are waaaaay overpriced.
for the price of a 4agze you can buy a silvertop, recon it with new TRD bearings, genuine 4agze pistons and gaskets and probably still have $$ left over if you do it ya self.
4agzes are over a grand. where as rebuilder silvertops are as little as 150-200

Oil for the turbo could cost upto $300. scary 8O. Then you'll probably need an oil filter relocator which would cost around $300 total.

If your using the 20V you'll need a custom plenum.

OMG THE COST :?
