Hamilton wins V8 street race
16 February 2006
By MARY ANNE GILL and MATTHEW TORBIT

Wellington's loss is Hamilton's gain, with the city tipped to host New Zealand's only V8 Supercar street race.

Hamilton City Council is expected to announce today that it has paid $7 million to secure New Zealand's biggest annual sports event from April 2008, ahead of Wellington and Auckland, which bowed out of the race to host the fixture last year.

The race will also come at the expense of Pukekohe, which has hosted the New Zealand leg of the series since 2001.

It is estimated it will attract more than 200,000 visitors to Hamilton and pump more than $150 million into the city's economy over seven years.

V8 Supercars New Zealand promoters, Capital Streetrace Management, refused to confirm the venue shake-up, but engineers were expected in Hamilton today to inspect the roads and put a works programme in place.

Wellington Mayor Kerry Prendergast said she admired Hamilton for deciding to host the event, as there were risks in the city obtaining resource consent. "I congratulate them on their gutsy decision and I wish them all the luck," she said.

Last April, Wellington City Council, citing resource consent problems, abandoned its bid to stage the race this year.

However, in July, the city put its hand up to host the event from 2008.

Race organiser Avesco spokesman Cole Hitchcock said he was excited to hear that a New Zealand venue was close to being announced.

Auckland had "missed out on a golden opportunity (to host the event) because of draconian resource consent laws", he said.

V8 Supercar Australia was on the brink of stopping the New Zealand race altogether last year tilltill Capital Streetrace Management agreed to pay the cost of air freighting the 32 racing teams to Auckland to keep the race at Pukekohe for two years.

However, the Australians made it clear they wanted to secure a seven-year deal for the race.

Frontrunners initially were Wellington and Auckland but resource consent issues hamstrung their bids.

Negotiations to stage the race in Hamilton began in the middle of last year.

Information obtained from Stuff.co.nz

My apologies if this has been posted previously but I haven't heard about Hamilton putting in a bid for the race after Auckland and Wellingtong turned it away.

I for one will be VERY happy if they get the deal!! :D

16/02/2006NewstalkZB / XtraMSNHamilton City Council is starting to contact Frankton residents who may be affected by a proposed V8 Supercar race circuit, but an Auckland group is disputing the city's claim to have the event sewn up.

Mayor Michael Redman says the council has secured a seven year deal to run the race from 2008, subject to resource consent.

He expects to discuss the issues widely with residents who object. Auckland City and Wellington missed out in hosting the series because of resource consent issues.

However, a group which wants to use the Whenuapai air base in west Auckland for the event claims they are still holding negotiations with organisers Avesco, and are further down the track in ironing out the details than Hamilton.

Spokesman Pete Sinton says his group has Government consent to use the airport and does not need resource consent.

will be cool if they use the Whenuapai airbase. My sister lives in married quarters just next to the base and her fiance' is in the 'force, so should be able to get some sort of cheap admission/parking :) Not sure whether I'd want to go though, last time I saw the v8s it was boring a f*ck.

I just drove around the proposed track...
I NOW HOLD THE TRACK RECORD FOR THE HAMILTON STREET TRACK!!
9 mnutes and 35 seconds in school rush hour traffic!

Off to a poor start as I got held up by parents in inappropriately sized vehicles clogging Ward Street outside Hamilton Girls High School, into the lovely right hander on to Seddon Road, left at the big (and fast) roundabout into King St, over/around/cross the roundabout where King crosses Lake road, dodged an NZ courier van as I turned to follow the railway on High street, under the Hall St overbridge where some school kids where spitting on cars driving underneath, right around the big radius corner onto Empire street past the Toll railway depot, across Kent then half right into Haig St, left into the long straight of Hall Street and into Mill street (rudely interupted by the Norton St lights), a big wait at the lights before turning right into Tristram St past/through/around the lights and roundabouts on the way back towards Ward st, then I nearly got hit by some idiot in a honda coming the other way who was stopped and indicating a right turn but then raced straight through the intersection, and finally back to the Hamilton Girls High School traffic jam!

Hell - I hope Tony Chochrane (AVESCO V8 Supercar boss) isn't just playing various NZ cities and venues off against each other to boost his ego like he has in the past?
I do hope it comes to something, not just hot air!
I don't know what the Hamilton ratepayers (including myself) will say when the rates go up to pay for all the road changes and crash barriers needed?

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

You sure about that, sounds to me like they're using the old Founders Theatre circuit that was used for motorcycle racing in the 70's & early 80's. In which case it should make for a very good race.

interesting comment on the red light hamilton article

"Spokesman Pete Sinton says his group has Government consent to use the airport and does not need resource consent."

does not need resource consent my foot... an air strip is just that. for planes not for race cars therefore it will need to be consented. plus i cant see AVESCO favouring a flat boring circuit with a hanger in the background versus a street race with scenery...

and then in aother article hes quoted as saying basically whenuapai pissed around for too long

Mr Cochrane says AVESCO will not be considering anymore more bids to host the races in New Zealand, although the group bidding to hold the races at Auckland's Whenuapai airbase was hoping they were still in the hunt.

from what has bee said round town today 99% of hamiltonians are stoked with it including a lot of buisness owners in that area. everyone can see the benefit of more money inthe city far outweighing having to find a new place to go and get your latte for 6 days lol

"Spokesman Pete Sinton says his group has Government consent to use the airport and does not need resource consent."

The organiser of the V8 Supercar races has confirmed it is a done deal with Hamilton City Council.

The seven-year deal will see the races held in Frankton.

Avesco Chairman Tony Cochrane says if the Council gets resource consent, V8 Supercars Australia will be in Hamilton for at least seven years commencing in 2008.

He says the Council has indicated it will take around nine months to secure the resource consent. Auckland and Wellington let the event slip though its fingers because of resource consent issues.

Mr Cochrane says AVESCO will not be considering anymore more bids to host the races in New Zealand, although the group bidding to hold the races at Auckland's Whenuapai airbase was hoping they were still in the hunt.

Mr Cochrane says they have not moved quickly enough to get the necessary approval. He says there is no point at looking at any other bids because the Hamilton City Council has got its act together.

The Council is starting to contact Frankton residents who may be affected by a proposed V8 Supercar race circuit.

He expects to discuss the issues widely with residents who object. Auckland City and Wellington missed out in hosting the series because of resource consent issues.
