4ws light

Postby sigma » Fri Feb 17, 2006 6:29 pm

recently the 4ws light has come on in my celica, i notice that when is on the rear wheels turn the opposite way than they usually do, last time this light came on (3 weeks ago), i topped up the oil and it went away and the steering when back to normal (topping up the oil probably wasnt the solution but its the only thing i did that i can think of)

can anyone enlighten me as to what might be the problem and is there any other way to fix it other than take it to a mechanic?

If your rear wheels turned the opposite way to normal wouldnt your car "slide" (only word i can think of) as oppose to turn... Like stay in a line facing the same way but moving sideways/forward...

and it crabs and doesnt turn as much or park as well and is $&#$% annoying.

i fixed mine by getting another left front hub and speed sensor. cruise control will also stop working. its a $&#$% bitch!

you could try resetting the rear stepper motor which worked a couple times for me. if you open the boot and take the rear trim panel off there are two plugs on the left side of the car.. one white, one blue.. you can disconnect both and start the car, stop it.. and plug them back in. same if you put power to the white plug.

but wont fix your problem if it is the speed sensor that is on its way out as it'll just happen again in a couple days time.

4ws makes the wheels turn in the same direction above about 50km/h, for changing lanes etc (making it crab a little) and in the opposite direction below about 50kmh to make sharp turns at low speeds easier (ie parking)

yes but his is now going the same way by default even below 50kph because his speed sensor is most likely out

doesn't the 4ws system have different modes that cause different behaviour from the system? could possibly just be in a mode that doesn't make for nice turning

well theres a button for 'sport' and a button for 'reverse 2ws', im guessing sport makes the wheels turn opposite directions even above 50kph and reverse 2ws is kinda self explanatory
