I'd only ever go for 4-2-1.....

4-1 just seems like it's done for cost effectiveness, more than anything.

4-1 has its advantages, none at all for a road car though.

To be honest i'd just stick with the standard ones, and spend the money elsewhere. The gain you would get wouldn't be that big.

If you have a close ratio gearbox and a full race motor then go 4:1
Otherwise you might find that you end up with no torque when you change into the next gear because the motor is so peaky.
HOWEVER...
If you are getting extractors made you could do what I did when I put a gen3 3sge into my racecar. I got the extractors made in 3 seperate pieces with slip joints and brackets so they can be bolted together.
primary - 1 x flange with 4 pipes
secondary - 2 x 2 into 1 pipes that fitted onto the 4 pipes
collector - 1 x 2 into 1 pipe that fitted onto the end of the 2 2into 1 pipes

So I have a 4:2:1 system but if I want to in the future I can get a 4 into 1 collector built and fit it onto the end of the 4 pipes.
I set it up so I can put pipes inline to extend the primary pipes or extend the secondary pipes to tune the extractors if I ever had the time.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

4-1 is old school peak power. Modern 4-2-1 extractors can have (if designed correctly) the same peak power (in most cases more) than a 4-1 extractor, howerver has a stronger mid range.
The answer is Helmholtz!
