snapping a shock

Postby evil_si » Sat Mar 04, 2006 9:28 pm

ok, my mate had a bit of trouble and somehow snapped the r/h shock in his ke30.
it is a clean break through the base of the chrome rod,
for the record they are BC ajustable coilovers.

he has no idea how it happened, swears black and blue that he hasnt hit anything,

im lost as to how it coild have happened, apart from the fact it must have been inferior materials used.

any one else ever experieced anything like this

Yes, but in a drift car. I'd say just crap manufacturing. Are they coilovers for the car, or from another car, made to fit in the 30?

i have spoken to bc in the states and they said they will be correcting the problem. so will get them some pics as requested and hopefully have an answer tuesday.

edyn, i wouldnt think that would be a problem unless it had no oil in it :? its still got plenty in it.

Hey there
How did the replacement went?
I brought the issue up when I was talking with my BC supplier the other day, and they told me that they did not make any coilovers specificly for a KE30, they mostly do late model japanese cars, maybe he was using a coilover for the other car?

The only time I've seen shock shafts broken is when they've been in a huge shunt or taken a huge hit(Rally normally). Without seeing the shaft it's hard to know what's caused it. It is possible that the piston has seized in the body(permanent or momentarily), I've seen this happen on bikes when there wasn't enough piston to bore clearance & the shock piston expanded more than the body & seized, this was with alumnium pistons & I think steel bodies(not 100 sure it was a while ago)& in that case the bodies failed(split in two) But if it hasn't had a huge hit or been yanked apart(Topped out/stretched at full extension) or else seized I'd say it is either a design/manufacturing or material fault & I'd be asking a lot of question as the last thing you want is for another one to fail when your driving the car.

Pics would be good so we can look for signs of a metal fatigue crack before the final failure.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

the b.c's were made for the ke30, but the half wit that made them just made them straight, they are suppose to have a slight angle in the lower part of the strut to align the hub and top hat mounting point.

as it didnt have the angle to much stress was placed on the shaft were it joins the piston and subsequently sheared.

have had a new set supplied, correctly made this time. and they are fine.
have been requested not to share pics of the problem on the net.

Could you provide the way to contact the dealer that sold those KE30 adjustables?

The sales department manager of BC manufacturer in Taiwan is quite confused about the situation that some dealer in the USA is selling BC adjustables made for KE30, and wish to speak with the dealer. They havent even heard about KE30 before when I first talked to them about this.

my impala broke a shock at the top it was due to the top hole being slightly to big and under pressure it moved enough to put to much pressure on the top of it not sure if that helps
