Blow off valve types

Postby Crucible » Sat Mar 04, 2006 6:16 pm

Ok time to buy a BOV for my gte setup, not at all interested in the (look at me everybody) pssssssttt or "loud" fluttering type valves just something that is fairly good quality and lets you know its opening with out too much attention seeking. I quite like the sound that bovs give off on some big trucks, sounds sort of like "booooooooh", if you know what I mean??

Is there a bov brand out there that sounds familiar to this or??? quessing someone here is bound to know

cheers in adv

rofl, my stock MR2 vented back into the air intake makes a "FOHHHH" sound.

under cruise it makes a SHUUUUUUUU sound
boosting SHUUUUUU-HISSSSSSSSSSS
low boost FOHHHH
big boost FU-OHHH

(ok this is getting weird)
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

Are these the "HKS super sequential types" that are on trade me?

Akane wrote: (ok this is getting weird)

Yeah haha, It is hard to explain what they sound like by text, but Im not really too interested in chasing the Evo that drives past to ask him what type of BOV he has hahaha

I got a SSQV, a VERY LOUD valve! I modified it, made sprign way harder, so it only opens when under high boost, other wise it was wenting out too much air, and was very loud every time I shifted or dropped the gas, also fuel aconomy got better as it is not wenting as much air out, just enough not to stall compressor at high boost. I still get za-ta-ta sound on low boost from turbo, but I get loud whistly ZSAA-TAA-ta-ta sound from bov coming off high boost.

afaik a good blow off valve would operate quickly and quietly, possibly venting the air back into the airbox/intake[/b]

plumb back for sure. probably the only way to keep it quiet.
FYI the bov sound on trucks is the sound of the turbo thru the exhaust, with no load on it, nothing to do with BOV's or anything. my diesel van does the same thing without the exhaust..

I've heard a plug in "turbo sounder" type thing that worked on vacuum pressure or something, but the guy had modified it to sound like a chicken.

so you got "normal" sounding turbo pressure build up, change gear and b-gerk... scared the sh|t out of people.

Hi, I'm V's sidekick so I'll answer that for him.

The MR2 one is good for very high HP, there are yanks in the states who are still using them on 500hp+ cars.

you HAVE to have it as plumback because it sucks air in during offboost (called a bypass valve), this is a function which bypasses air going into the turbo during cruise to maximise response and fuel economy (questionable).

My caldina one works well, leaks over about 20 psi though, much quieter than my type III

I want to get the sort of BOV a mate I had in aus had on his VL turbo (rb30det)

it had a number of whistle pieces around it, was sort of like a type three, as it released it would wolf whistle...

lol adds a whole new meaning to "skank whistle"
