4AGZE Supercharger, signs of wear, reconditioning???

Postby DB4G63 » Thu Mar 09, 2006 8:59 pm

hi

Having attained a AE101 GTZ just over a month ago I have been wondering what sort of maintence needs to be done on the supercharger itself.
My car is just about to tick over 140,000.
I read somewhere that there is oil within the supercharger that needs to be changed and bearings that get shagged over time....
If I use the charger alot ( ie climbing up hills for a while) there is a mild smell that comes thru the vents. Is this a sign of wear?
I was thinking about taking it to Toyota and getting it checked out...

Just wondering if anyone else has has an advice or experience?
Would like to try and keep the charger in good condition
thank you!! :D

As far as servicing goes, the only thing you can really do to them is change the fluid. I like to do mine anually.

Its probably a good idea to just change it, chances are it hasnt been done in a while. Even though it may look clean on the dipstick, but when you pull it out its dirty! Don't bother taking it to Toyota, just get in touch with Mr Revhead and get him to send you 150mLs of the stuff, will cost around $35. Do a search on how to do it

I guess the only sign of wear which is easily visible on them is if it uses fluid. If it does its probably on the way out. That smell isnt much of a concern, I occasionally get that too.

And as for reconditioning, well that option is all but out, 'apparently' there is a place in Auckland that does it but no-one knows where. If it blows or whatever then its either 2nd hand time or turbo the biatch

As aesc said the only sort of maintence you can do on the super charger is an oil change. The only way to give you an idea on the condition of a supercharger is to take it off the engine and look for:

Oil on rotors/housing/piping after supercharger = oil seals stuffed (needs new seals but bearings need to be removed to get to seals)
Marks/scratches/groves or rotors and /or housing= dirt or other material has damaged rotors/housing (possible perfermance loss.)
Bearing noise when supercharger spun by hand either excessively worn or has bad bearings

A rebuild is possible, but as you cant get toyota bearings/seals for them you have to get larger bearings and machine the housing out to suit, but it would only be worth it if the condition of the rotors and housing are free from scratches/marks etc... When I have rebuit my supercharger I will let you know the details.

It's not the case of the oil is dirty or not, oil break down after time just like engine oil, and loses it's ability to lubricate.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.
