Hey there,

was told from a mate that its bad to overfill the engine oil.

is it true? if so why?

Yes
because when your crank bashes the pool of oil, it creates air bubbles (or to that effect), which makes oil loses a lot of it's luberation properties, I think it also affect how the pump gets the oil.

not only the foaming and such as above (which can cause major damage)...overfilling also can blow/make seals leak.On a turbo car, it may restrict the return oil line, again causing problems and blowing seals.
Even if you have a car which burns oil, overfilling can make things worse, so its not really a good idea to 'plan ahead' knowing it would burn some off.
slightly over fill (like just slightly) is fine, but something like 500ml +, you really should drain some out rather than risk more costly damage...but thats just my opinion on the matter.

how can you overfill oil? I thought you just filled it up until it reaches the top of the part where you pour it in. If you put any more oil in it would just go everywhere..?

Yea, kinda makes you wonder why they only sell it in like, 4/5 litre bottles. You would have to buy a lot of those!

I know of someone who overfilled their oil. The seals on the sump blew and covered the manifold in oil which set fire and they lost the whole car.

Insurance didn't pay either because it was a very forseeable thing. I laughed, I told them it was bad to overfill. They didnt listen

My old man got given a Telstar by one of his workmates, as it was making horrible knocking and clonking noises, and was really hard to start in the morning.
He took it home, and drained 8 litres of oil out of it

Poor thing must have had oil halfway up the bores!

I was flying a small airplane towards Kalgoorlie in Western Australia about 6 years ago.
I took off and climbed up to about 7,000 feet (approx 2100 metres)...
Everything was normal when I was climbing but when I levelled off the oil pressure gauge went almost down to zero and then back up to normal after about a second. It did this again and I thought "Hmmmm, $&#$% this", so I turned around and flew back to the airport (about 10 minutes flying).
On the way back to the airport I kept a good lookout for suitable paddocks to land in if I had to.
Back at the airport the engineer looked at the engine and found that it had been filled with double the required amount of oil!!! The oil pressure was ok when I was climbing as the engine was tilted back, but when I flew level the crank was thrashing around in the oil and causing big bubbles of air to go through the oil pump.

Best ever though, indian mechanic at now R & B Porirua Wgtn did a service on customers car, oil change, filters etc etc, was filling with new oil from oil pump 15 minutes latter a workmate thought...hmmmm he's been filling that for a while, walks over to find 30 odd liters of oil spread over the floor

someone forgot to put the sump plug back in :lol:

lol, what a muppet. Also, the polar opposite- knew an apprentice who was given servie duties- drained oil, changed filter, done!

whoops, what about the new oil!?...how would one explain that to the customer honestly!?

Muppet is an under statement, same guy put the mudflaps on the FRONT of the wheel arches, he excuse for doing this......"its cause I backed the car in to my bay"

a friend of mine overheated his parents Justy RS. He put water in "where the smoke was coming out". That would be the oil filler hole. The one with the cap labelled "oil".

Suffice to say, I got a 4am phone call saying "I think I've just done something very dumb", once he had driven about 7km on an interesting mix of 3.5l of oil and about the same of water to get to the nearest phone (24 hour gas station).

That was one seriously disgusting gluggy mess.
