corolla TRD springs

Postby Caveman » Thu Mar 23, 2006 11:41 pm

Hi, im just looking to upgrade my suspension. Its an ae92 levin. I currently have whiteline progressive lowering springs, 45mm drop all round. Have tried monroe and standard shocks, standard were definatly better.

Anyway this car is going to be a track car involving mainly autocross and gravel hill climb with the occasional circuit visit. Comfort is not an issue, neither is noise.

I have done a search and everyone recommends TRD springs. From what I gather these lower around 20mm? This would be perfect as current setup is too low.

Everyone recommends them but I cant find any descriptions of how they ride, handle, etc. My main concern is getting the rear frimer as its way to soft right now, heaps of understeer.

Also what sort of shocks should I look at. How are monroe gt? I really dont like the standard monroe range but my mate has really good results with the monroe GT. What about KYB? Koni? I dont really need adjustable, just 1 hard setting 8) bascially if harder is better i'd like to know, I dont give a damn about comfort, I have my daily anyway so this will hopfully be an all out racer.

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

I just put KYB's into my AE92 Levin and are pretty happy with them. Fairly firm but with a decent ride too. Just be sure to check if you have struts or inserts on the front and tell them this... saves some swearing later on :P

ive got trd springs in my ae111

ride is alot stiffer than standard but not as stiff as king springs or similar would produced, but it has hardly any roll, quite suitable for new zealands potholed roads

if you want to reduce understeer you will need at least a new rear stabiliser, ive got front and back trd ones and the difference it made is unbelivable, especially around tight hill roads, you REALLY have to push it to make it understeer (good tyres make a difference with that as well)

yeah monroes are rubbish... go the konis.
try a whiteline rear sway bar (i can supply) they make an amazing difference.

do that then think about changing your springs (but i doubt ull have too) most TRD springs are a 25-30mm drop

Thanks for the info guys.

I may keep my whiteline springs, and just try the rear sway bar, shocks and nolethane bushes. I would have though being lowered 45mm would be getting near the suspension stroke limit.

Just as a guide the rear whiteline are about as soft as standard rear.

TRD do a rally/dirt spring which apparently keep the ride hieght ner the same as factory but just stiffen it slightly, this is what i am going to get so i dont drag the ass of the car over the gravel 99% of the time

Well after having a look at TRD's website it looks like the TRD lowering springs and TRD rally springs are both road legal and similar rates. The rally maintain standard ride height, I think these are for me 8)

Here are the stats for anyone who is interested

TRD AE92 - rally springs
Part No. Qty List Price Spring Rate Body colour-Mark colour
Front
48131-AEA52-27 2 Discontinued K=26.5N/mm Light blue￾|White
48131-AEA52-31 2 7,000 K=30.4N/mm Light blue￾|Yellow
48131-AE951-35 2 Discontinued K=34.3N/mm Green
Rear
48231-AEA52-27 2 7,000 K=26.5N/mm Light blue￾|Yellow
48231-AE951-30 2 Discontinued K=29.4N/mm Green

TRD AE92 - Lowering springs
Part No. Qty List Price Remarks
48130-AE900 1 Discontinued Full set
48131-AE911 (2) 7,000 Front￾@K=31.4N/mm
48231-AE911 (2) 7,000 Rear￾@K=29.4N/mm

From http://trdparts.jp/english/

Would anyone know the standard spring rate for ae92?

EDIT: I think the unit N/mm may be incorrect as 31.4N/mm works out as 0.277lb/in  I would assume the correct unit to be N/m as 31.4N/m works out as 277lb/in

EDIT (again): It seems my maths sucks and the correct unit is N/mm  31.4N/mm works out as 180lb/in
