I'd say clutch. Those cars have pretty tough gearboxes. So, you put your foot on the clutch, and it doesn't go into gear? Does it do the same with the car off? If you turn the car off, make sure you're on the road with nothing in front of you, put it in first, and try and start it. If it jumps forward, I'd say clutch line or clutch plate. If it doesn't go into gear with the car off, or goes into 1st but doesn't have drive, you've broken the gearbox or shift mechanism.

jazza: becuz its a turbo charade... do you have any idea how insane these are?

they have steel cranks and forgies standard. ppl run 30+psi on them, my m8s only runnning 15psi cuz of boost cut, needs a aftermarket ecu, then the pounds will rise

From memory i believe there was a rather rapid one in wellington quite a few years back owned by the man with an evo which goes by the name of docile, gave quite a few people in what they thought were quick cars a fairly big fright.
Nice sleeper if you can get your hands on a good one, oh and the not being able to select anything, if you can get gears with the car off, clutch and if not he's bent something in the selection mechanisim - also some details about if it stopped being able to go into gear while he was driving it or over night
