My personal fav is the SR20DE - mine has had 288,000km of abuse now and still runs sweet as a nut. A big thumbs down to the 3SGE IMO, my boss has popped too many of them in his rally car - in the last 2 years the count is 3 sets of bearings and two broken conrods (one exiting through the sump and the second out the side of the block).

My pick though goes to a Ford crossflow in a dunger Escort one of our club members brought to a Motorkhana a few years ago. The aim was to kill it so they had 3 people competing in it during the day, on the last test (ever decreasing circles) the heat and lack of oil finally got to it - every lap it was getting tigher and tigher until suddenly it just siezed. We pushed it off the course and started congratulating ourselves on a job well done... until someone tried starting it 10 minutes later and it sprung into life better than ever! Finished the event and drove it home not a problem.

I don't know about the escort crossflow being all that strong - try revving one to 10k rpm - it won't last long (about 10 seconds i think....).

Anyway the FE2 engine in our mazda 626 seems to be unbreakable - it leaks oil and makes stranges noises but always starts and runs fine, well except for the time i forgot to refill the coolant and the petrol boiled out of the carb.
Did the cambelt for the first time at 230000k, nothing wrong with it, i was just starting to get worried it would break in the middle of nowhere.

Also i've heard stories of the pistons in the FE2 splitting, but when the engine was pulled apart the bores are still perfect - apparently the block is made out of some super strong iron.

My vote would definately go to a K-series.. or the 2E.

I have seen them utterly ravaged (By other people of course :roll: ) and still go absolutely strong afte 400 000+ k's. Definately a hardy S.O.B.

i did another 1500kms on the 4af after burning a valve, gave it death to shifting at 7000rpm most of the time even when cold, smoked alot and went pretty slow but still quicker than "normal" people. if it hadn't run out of petrol i could tell you exactly how strong it is. i don't have much respect for RBs though a mates one blew the headgasket and warped the head so much it snapped the exhaust cam, slut to work on as well

But 8k is "readline". Have you taken one higher than 8k??

no cant say i have, i dont no what the redline was as the EE80 didnt have a standard tacho only and aftermarket one

Not as powerful as the g units (:D )but f series engines are very hardy. I had a 3sf off the tacho (8krpm)in second gear for aaaaagggges. No rev limiter, just didn't have the fueling to rev any more.

Apart from the more highly strung 20valves potential for destruction there aint really a bad Toyota engine... is there?

4AGE 16V, Have one that i regulary ring the nuts off, IMO the 20V is a bit too highly strung and doesnt seme to last quite as long the the older technology.

If i could vote for more than 1 option i wouldve also voted for the RB nissan series

I know a guy who goes to my school who wakes up every morning fires up his rb20, and redlines it in 1st and 2nd down the road. Hes been doing it half a year, and hasnt spent a dollar on his car...

yeah, i've seen a 2E go 200,000 kms without an oil change and still go!

4AGEs - they suprise the hell out of me on how much abuse a little 1600 can take and still remain ever reliable.

The K20? Honda engine? The one in the S2000. 9000rpm from a stock motor in a (reletivly) cheap sports car is pretty awesome.

3SF - The carbied one. 255+ thou ks, will pull 200km/h, handle a road accident, and then survive 2 demolition derbys. The beast still went after all that.

And finally, the 4G93? The VR4 4 cylinder. Evo drivers gloat about the strengths of the 4G63, but the 4G93 is a lot harder and can be made to haul. Just look at the 700 odd HP in the street legal black VR4 that pulls 10s, and the Ohlsen's little mirage.
