4age ECU performance chips

I got an ae86 ECU which has a sticker on the top saying "FuelTronics - EFI Performance Chips" or something to that effect. this computer doesn't work on my standard 4age. it will crank over and fire once but won't actually keep idling and won't fire again until you turn the key off start and try again.

1. is this sticker just bullcrap, that someone put on hoping it will make their car faster? 8)
2. is it possible the computer is actually chipped, but won't run on a standard engine. (maybe its setup for different cams or something?? - i dont know)
3. is the sticker just a sticker, and the ECU is faulty? (it has been dropped a couple of times :? )

and no, I can't get fault codes from it.

Whip the cover off and see if there seems to be any mods done to it.

While it is tru that Toyota ECU's cannot be chipped,

there were available replacement boards which you just fitted inside the original alloy case. It may be one of these?

sometimes they pull out ECU, solder in the ribbon cable instead wich goes to extra board with separate ROM (28 pin) and CPU (40 pin), just open and see if has got that extra board.
I have 2 "chipped" toyota ECU's :
Mine's ECU - 20v silvertop - 9k rpm limiter extra timing fueling no speed cut
Blitz ECU - 3SGTE - higher rev limiter (7600?), no speed cut (I assume, did not test it), higher boost cut (don't know - do not use MAP sensor) extra fueling (goes defenetly better than with 165 ecu)

Both have extra boards, and both are 1.5 times taller then stock unit (different top cover), and defentely main board on both stock toyota (becuase of ND chips)
The funny things is that with blitz ecu they removed all the markings from the chips on the aftermarket board, although I know what chip is the ROM and I can guess what they used for CPU (8051? or some other intel architecture), so once I get my hands on programmer I will try to crack what is on the ROM..

Ive got a "FuelTronics" Chiped ECU in my turbo s starlet, I opened it up when I first got it and comparied it to my standard one. There was a few minor differences but nothing that major looking. There is also a slight performance difference between them but I dont have any dyno sheets to prove it. It also has no 180km/h cut out

Price wise, how much would a chipped ECU with no speed cut cost for a 3sgte? Just curious...

Not sure about the 3S ECUs but I can give you an idea of how much they might go for.

1JZ Soarer chipped ECUs eg. Mines/Toms normally go from about 700-900$ AUD and that's for a second hand unit.

yes, it is in a bluetop. i'm running the engine with another ae86 ECU right now. i've checked all the pin-outs and they match the ae86 pinouts.
i'll pull the cover off and compare it with my other ECUs.
if it is chipped it would just be a board replacing the old one or something, as the ECU housing is still original.

would a chip like that effect whether the engine would run or not in the way I've described? or is the idea of these chips focused on removing speed limiters etc?
I know some link ECUs won't run with modified cams etc. is it possible that this one won't run on standard cams? or do these chips not do those sort of modifications?

I'm sure it will be either AT27C256 or AT29C256, pretty standart 256k rom.
And MCU possibly will be 8051 chip.
And standrad issue serial/paraller port programmer will do the job.

that means nothing to me. :oops: are the chips supposed to be programmed/tuned to run properly?
I will get the ECU when I go home for lunch and get a pic of it. i'll get a pic of one of my standard ECus as well.

To "tune" aftermarket chip of unknown origin, you will have to "disassemble" the code on ROM, then figure out how it works and where the data is stored, and if decrypt it if neccesary (remove encryption), then make up a "tuning" software (or modify data manualy if you can convert hex to decimal in the head ;) ), you will need to know how to tune properly as well, spend time on dyno (road) and probably make up another board that will allow you to program it on the fly (not easy) through serial board. SO IN MY OPNION, AFTERMARKET "CHIPPED" ECU's ARE ALMOST AS USELESS FOR TUNING AS STOCK ONES.

Here's a pic of the ECU, hopefully it is close enough. The close-up focus on the camera is crap!! The one on the left is the "chipped" version, the one on the right is standard. They are different models though, the left ecu is off the earlier model bluetops and the right ecu is off the later models.
There is a Denso number on the board of the "chipped" one, this is - DENSO 175731-0460-2

Would a replacement board have a Denso number on it still?

It does not looked "chipped" to me... both look genuine items.
Are you sure it is blue top ecu not redtop or GZE?

yep, I've checked it again the pin-outs for a genuine ae86 ECU and it all matches.

must just be a flash looking sticker on an ecu thats been dropped one too many times :lol:

They look different generation to me (grey vs yellow) the yellow plug one being earlier. Maybe the difference in sesnors (is it AFM?) is cause of not running?

nah Im pretty sure all the sensors are the same.

looking in to the plugs, they are the exact same format/layout as any normal ECU from memory. I will check when I go home though.
