This seems like a stupid question but I am wondering whether a townace with a 7K-e engine in would be able to tow a car on a trailer for about 200kms without blowing the clutch or anything?

I only wonder because it is the only vehicle handy and I need to tow a vehicle this friday with it or find a new vehicle rather quickly.

it shoud supose so....but it depends on the overall conditon on the engine radiator gearbox clutch etc etc and your driving style....

up to you i suppose ur a bit stuffed if it clapps out halfway home and ur stuck with two broken cars!

Mate, it'll be fine, I've towed a racecar on a braked trailer with a 1000cc KP60! Cruised at 80km/h no problems! You'll be fine, just remember to accelerate smoothly, brake very early and gently, and the legal limit for towing is 80km/h.

Also, keep checking behind you, and pull over often, to let people pass you, especially on the motorway in the 100km/h zone! Its' just courteous! People who hold others up make me angry..

I've towed a 1200kg Cordia on a 500kg tandem axle trailer behind my 1.8L 1050kg Galant (engine just as gutless as a 7k), from Helensville to Hamilton.

I wouldn't recommend it at all. Although the car held up fine with no overheating and no extra clutch wear, it just didn't seem so safe on the road. I tried hard to balance the weight on the trailer, with maybe about 50~100kg downforce on the towbar, but the front still was pretty jacked up.

Just a note, the legal limit of towing is 3/4 the weight of the tow car. If you get snapped, you can get fined.

I towed an S13 Silvia from Titahi Bay to Palmy with the wagon on an A frame. Was fine. Just yeah, be careful and do everything smoothly.

Cool, thanks guys. Yeah I worked it out just then and I should be fine for the vehicle weight, I'm just towing a starlet race car so its pretty light.

I am actually considering using an A frame now rather than a trailer because my dads friend with the trailer is off on some hunting trip and might not be back in time. But i'm guessing the same rules apply with the A frame anyway about taking it slow and stuff.

with a light, under powered tow vehicle an A-frame is a better option. plenty of lads A-frame cars to and from events, in fact i've only seen Hopper's Mascort on a trailer a couple of times.

He told me he was just too lazy to be bothered with trailers :lol:

But I plan to get a proper powered vehicle, its just a matter of finding one.

used to tow the Levin on a trailer with the back full of the road closure signs and barriers to and from events with a really tired 3T Townace. usually handled the task, until i destroyed the engine with a combined mass of 4.8ton towing a load of rubble to the landfill. :twisted:

A townace will do fine, I've towed a dead falcon with a 316 BMW before and it worked. (I was to chicken to go on the motorway though)
