Rally car progress...

Postby GT4 20 » Wed Apr 05, 2006 7:09 pm

Yes, I've actually done something on the Rover! Despite my best intentions, I have been distracted by the GT-Four of late so thought I should really get back into the swing of things. Not a huge step, but at least one in the right direction...

Hydraulic handbrake assembly and 'emergency control panel'. Handbrake cradle and lever were picked up from the powdercoaters this arvo and all was put together. Swung by a cycle shop and bought a rubber hand grip which was stretched into place. Not what I'd call bling, but practical and functional. Just right for a rally car :D

The panel has the master push button for the SPA plumbed in extinguisher system along with the control box. This enables the system to be armed, disarmed and allows circuit testing. There will be an external button too. Same with the battery master switch.

The ratchet system is simplicity personified. Lift up the lever to keep the brake on and rotate the locking mechanism and it is held in place. A slight pull on the level and it automatically unlocks thanks to the spring. Just perfect for those tight hairpins

Sounds good although if you have it up long enough to lock it your going to slow :P
How are you planning on hooking it into your brake setup of are you adding extra callipers etc, i've been trying to think how to go about setting up a viable system in my car and haven't managed to sort anything out yet - however i have only been thinking rather than actually having a look  oh and it doesn't help that the car isn't here but rather getting some panel work that i can't do done on it instead

Will be simply using the rear calipers only with no additional calipers. Car will have a log book and certed so no issues there.

Yeah same as mine will be, what i'm wondering is does yours have two fluid containers and if not how are you going to stop fluid going to all 4 corners when you apply the hand brake?? Thats the problem i'm having even with a bias valve in there

Big master cylinder up front on the bulkhead. New pipework all round with one pipe splitting to each of the front caliper. Then one pipe going through a bias valve to the cylinder on the handbrake. After that, it splits into 2 for the rear calipers.

Man thats cool. It would be cool to use a handbrake while harnessed in. When I went to an autocross in a road car and used the handbrake (had to, was in a fwd) I kept slipping out from underneath the seatbelt :P

How much did the hydraulic handbrake bit of that set you back? I'm being constantly tempted to go that direction for my motorkhana-ing.

It was custom made. I've seen 'off the shelf' units in the Demon Tweeks catalogue going from around $300+...

Find a good fabricator and even with a new cylinder, should cost a lot less.
