Not really, because unless you've got a dirty big V8 under the hood the motor will be nowhere near its peak torque. Besides which, in the Sentra at least, I use at the most probably around 10% of the throttle travel when cruising at 60km/h in 5th, which surely can't be too hard on the drivetrain (gotta love the extra torque in the 2l compared to the Corollas' 4AGE :D )
We know that four-wheel drive doesn't work in a racing car, and I proved to myself that it doesn't work very well for rallycross. I'm absolutely convinced that it has no future in rallying, either, even if the regulations allowed it. - Roger Clark (rallying legend), circa 1976

great thing about the 1jz's, they just pull from 600rpm in 5th, great for people that can't drive very well, they hardly ever stall it!

What's 50?

I just had to go out and do a road test to answer this difficult question. The answer is 4th. In all truth I don't think I've done 50 in ages. Either I'm on the open road, or commuting, so basically either 5th or first is most of the driving I do.

Maintaining speed aint a problem, you change down to accelerate but keeping to just under 60 km in 6th at 1700-ish rpm isn't a problem... even with a 20v.

That's why on occasion we get 12-15 kms from a litre in a "performance" ( )car.

Although, a quick blat through first and second evens that all out to about 10kms a litre.

I think i kinda misread what the real intention of the question was. After thinking about it. Around town on the flat, im in 4th, around Howick im in 3rd usually, slowing and speeding up again alot.

Im in 4th in the 50ish zones, bout 1800rpm i think form memory, 3rds a bit droney with the exhaust.
I never go 50 unless behind someone going 50, usually a 55-60 person, oh except for schools with that new rule.

:D
If you say please, im on my knees

4th but even the slightest bit under 50 or to accelerate 3rd. at 60 5th can be used but again no good for even slightly under or for accelerating. 1st @ 6000rpm is good if you want to be looked at funny

I think pretty much every manual i've ever driven is comfortable in 4th at ~55. 50km/h is just a tad low for 4th in a lot of cars - including my -four if I recall. If I can do 55-60 it'll sit in 4th happily enough... 5th is too low.

Nowadays? Go the auto trans... ! (I usually pull it out of O/drive if i'm going to be floating around at much less than 55.)

3rd @ 2200 is what I use, particularly as you are likely to end up behind someone around town doing 25-30 and it give you enough power to accelerate.

4ht drops the revs to 1800, makes it deep & throaty enough to set off alarms and lacks power until you get it up above 2k again and I tested fifth on a cruise this afternoon and the revs drop to 1200 in a fifty zone.

Given my tyre and wheel package the actual speed is 3.5% higher than the speedo reading so the revs would be even lower still if I was actually doing that speed.
