Any further info on the Mazda 2.5 V6?
What V angle are they (60 deg? etc), belt or chain driven, overall dimensions? What's the factory red line and any reason why it can't be increased with the usual mods? What's the CR and will increasing it safely release more power?
Cheers

What are you limiting yourself by? Capacity, has to be FWD etc etc?

I say the FTO's 6A12 mivec motor - mate/customer has just installed one into a mirage rally car, was a straight (no, really!) bolt in job. He's got a spare engine as well, so there's going to be a fair bit of experimentation with just how many revs the little sucker can take reliably.

Even in a full weight FTO street car, getting mid 14s passes is a matter of an intake pipe and a decent exhaust, and the FTO is no lightweight. They are a seriously underrated car, its a shame the majority of them have T wings and fluffy toys in the back window!

Even my VR4 engines (which is the same core engine, just twin turbo-ed) rev out to 8200rpm straight out of the box, redlined at 7600. I absolutely love these engines - I've coaxed around 250kW out of a pair of them (thats worked out via trap speed vs weight) so far on stock internals + turbos (with only 15psi), never had a trace of a power-related failure.

But then, I'm biased

Ill second that - my mates got a 5spd mivec v6 FTO, the only mods are 17s and a pod and he ran a 14.8s 1/4 mile at meremere with street pressure in the front tyres and a full tank of gas. passenger and rear seats removed, but they weighed f*ck all. i was pretty impressed with it

am considering a small collection of soft toys for his birthday :P

What about Alfa? They do excellant 2.5 or 3.0 V6 engines, Alfa 164s are a cheap doner.

Overall size is going to be the real limiting factor as the engine bay it's going into was designed for a 4 pot. Firewall mods are not an option (due to cost) so that's why I need something that is quite compact. Factory power isn't too important as the engine would be rebuilt anyway with uprated internals etc though a target of around 200hp would be a good start. Need to keep power at a realistic level - no point having high power outputs if you can't put the power to the ground. Especially so for a FWD car.

not that it would be easy to fit (RWD architecture..although a FWD version is avaliable in the new Camry) and its uber expensive since its just been released, but the JDM Toyota 3.5l 2GR-fse is a great engine....The Jdm version (used in the Crown Athelete among others) pumps out 314hp (234kW) and 280 lb/ft torque...pretty good for an NA V6...

6A12 good points - Compact (fits in the same space as a similar capacity 4 pot), fairly light (lighter than my 3SGTE was 8O ), already makes 180hp out of the box and gaining 20 hp is very easy, they respond well to simple mods. They also sound bloody nice, though most small capacity V6's always do.

Downsides - Fairly rare, and hence not a lot of off the shelf aftermarket gear for them, depends on what you really want though. RPW in oz make a lot for them, but you pay through the nose for it.

In oz they are a reasonably common swap for the mivec mirages, its literally a straight bolt in swap - I have no idea what you're planning on putting this into though! The fact its' designed to be a high - revving screamer in a performance-ish application is a good thing, as opposed to taking a normal shopping cart engine then pushing it. Same as starting with a B18C-R instead of a B16A really.

The mazda/ford engines are also a good option - I've heard of some great results from them, I think the radisich ones make 200hpish from factory? Try getting hold of the guy who does the datadots in wellington, he's on a couple of forums as "FPV270" or something, he knows his stuff on them.

Just my 2c anyway. Curious to see whats going to become of this!

It's to be used in the Rover. I ditched plans to run the stock T16 turbo engine due to weight, reliability, etc. The car will be used for tarmac events such as hillclimbs and targa.

I really want somethin that would be easy to replace in case of failure. This is why I'm not opting for the Rover 1.8 K series or the Rover 2.5 KV6 engines. Difficult to find and when you do, silly prices.

Have you thought about a Subaru 2.5L Flat 4 or the SVX 3.3L Flat 6?

I'm sticking with the Rover PG1 gearbox as I have a Quaife close ratio straight cut gearset for it.

They arent worth while dude. They lack torque and have the same power as the competition.

It's about availability. If cost was no object (despite what some think  ) then I'd opt for a Rover KV6 motor. Trouble is availability of not just the engine, but parts. At least the Mazda lump, for example, is relatively plentiful and good parts back up - both factory and aftermarket.
