I really need to get hold of a blown motor - HG, holed piston etc - first so I can do a trial fit to esnure it'll go into the engine bay okay as well as ensuring the gearbox can be made to mate up. Once that is confirmed, I can look at a decent engine and then rebuild it :D

I would have a look at the 6G72 MIVEC 3.0l V6 out of a 30M Diamante.

It puts out 180KW stock and should be fairly easy to get to 190-195 with some minor work.

260HP at FW would make the 220GTi move I think.

The 6G72 MIVEC actually puts out close to 200kW stock.

The trouble is, it is an iron block construction, quite large and heavy. The original poster is looking for a lightweight all alloy engine to put into his Rover which originally had a 4 cylinder engine.

I'm suprised no one has mentioned which way in the engine bay the donor engine should be.

I'm entirely sure about the Rover, but isn't the engine on the passenger side in the engine bay (ie same as Honda)? The FTO 6A12 is on the drivers side, as are all Toyota and Mazda engines. The only 6A12 which is going to fit in there is the ones out of the E54A series Galant. There is a MIVEC VX-R model, but very hard to find.

Nope, engine is on the driver's side as it originally came with a Rover powerplant.

The 3.0L is rated at 180KW. The 3.5L (as used in the Evo Pajero) is 206KW.

Yes the 6G7x is fairly heavy but any V6 replacing the M16 4 pot is going to be heavy.

Does it have to be an NA V6? I am thinking something like a SR20DET might be a better idea if the M16 is not an option any more.

Yes. The T16 (M series was earlier) was turbo and I don't want to go down that route for many reasons. NA V6 will be a good source of torque, more so than most 4 pots.

You haven't thought about going class C?
Or is the Rover a little on the heavy side?
I can't believe the praise in this thread for Mitsi engines. I for one am not much of a fan, however I'm looking at the 6a10 as a replacement engine for the Bunderson... I just think a 1600cc V6 is bloody cool.

Now for the big challenge, to get at least 178 rwhp from its tiny 6 pots.

Another thing, the 6a10 is an engine that is stupidly cheap. Although they are relitively rare every mitsi man and his dog seems to have one sitting in his garage. For reasons I am yet to discover. I recieve my first 6a10 about the end of this week. First thing I'll do is pull the heads and flow them.

in defence of the sr20det, the parts are cheap, they make lots of torque, they are a known quantity when it comes to building for a certain power level, and there are plenty of local companies with experience building them

I have nothing against the SR20DET - just that if I go with one of those, I may as well save the $ and keep the T16 that came with the car.
I appreciate that everyone has their own idea of what would be best, and that is what makes this such a great thread. But at the end of the day, an all alloy V6 which needs to be compact to fit in the engine bay is what I am going for.

Not sure what Class C rules are, but with engine, I anticipate the all up weight being between 1000 to 1100kgs.

Just as a side note : how's the rest of the rover going? Last time I saw pics of it you were getting a cage and had a side exit exhaust? Any updates?

Its been a while since I was rallying, however class C is the 1600cc reg class. I dont have a MANZ rulebook (Now Motorsport NZ) so can't give you specifics. Your weight will be on the high side, but with a 1600cc v6 you might be compeditive. In class C you will be competing against the AE86 and CRX's.

If anyone wants a VR6 motor i have one that i am more than willing to part with.. seems to run okay... comes complete with a 95 Passat wagon.. one minor problem.. the auto trans bolted to it is stuffed. (1st and 2nd gear drive.. 3rd and fourth = lots of revs and no forward motion)

Make me an offer on the motor that is not insultingly low and you can take the whole bloody thing.. hell, i might even be able to get it delivered to you if you are in auckland hamilton or tauranga :)

I'm going to disagree here. The Mivec 6G72 is 199kw(270PS)@7000rpm and 301Nm(30.7Kg/m)@4500rpm.

Check out http://english.auto.vl.ru/catalog/mitsubishi/diamante/1996_1/16749/
I also have numerous Mitsubishi catalogues and brochures at work which show the same.

Perhaps you mean the normal N/A DOHC 24V 6G72 as found in the F36A/F46A Diamantes, which is close to 170kw. The 3.5L 6G74 Pajero Evo motor is 'rated' at 206kw, but in reality it's much more.
