Postby bluemaumau » Wed Apr 12, 2006 6:17 pm

hey everyone

my 4agze afm has a starter motor problem,
i would like to begin putting the gze into the rolla this weekend so i want to do this whilst the engines out,

whats my best bet?

1. replce with new item
2. replace with used item
- will the starter motor from any other 4age or model fit?
3. recondition old item?

any help is appreciated,

anyone on TS who does reconditioning? its off the motor btw

cheers

whats the problem with it?
most common thing on starters is simply the brushes being worn and in need of replacement (easy as job). sometimes solenoids stick, but the can be cleaned up or replaced. Only other thing Ive had with a few toyota starters is the bush on the gear end wearing...again, easy enough to repair/replace.
I'd do that if it was mine, but then again, if $$ is no issue...

If you are using a GZE gearbox you have to use the GZE starter motor.

Correct but not with the GZE as they are gear reduction.
Only the earlier type do that.

The common gear reduction ones,
1 in 50 will have worn brushes,
about 1 in 40 will have faulty solenoid windings,
the dont have bushes' at all, fully bearing'd.

99% have worn contacts in the solenoid which can be replaced easy as without having to replace the whole solenoid.

Also they suffer a lot from voltage drop to the starter operating sw.

We do those type's at work every day.

Yeah, if you've done as many as I have they are.

If you want to send it down I can do it at a not too bad price.
PM me if your keen.
