It's because "drifting" has changed, it used to just be a byproduct of going as fast as you could but now it's all about the old "rota" crew (hoodies and shizzle) buying nissans and going around a track slowly whilst wasting heaps of money.
Granted it is nice to watch and there are some very skilled guys on the NZ circuit but It's become a stupid overfunded exercise with money as the main ingredient and corporate sponsership the only goal.

Maybe I'm jaded but give me a standard 86 and I'll be happy as... give me that other monstrosity and I'll sell it to a honda owner

Hate to say it but, you are obviously jealous or something along those lines, your comments are quite weak and uneducated.
most drifters are on the bones of there arse and have been for years to get out there and do what they love, its a combination of love for having fun/adrenalin and competitiveness (sp?) if people are trying to get sponsor help cover the costs of running there car and there dream, so they can eat and pay the rent every week, good on them, they've earned it, its alot harder puttingyourself and your most prized possetion one the line than sitting behind a pc talking on a ghey forum about which pod filter is best.
people can modify there cars how they like, if you dont like it stop looking i.e get your own entertainment
old rota crew ? where did you get that from ? and what the hell would it matter if people who like drift have liked whatever type of car before ? what makes you and your likes that much better.

bottom line is, people can do what they like with modifying there cars, market value is dictated by the market, people can sell there cars for what ever they want, or what ever the 1 buyer who wants the car wants to pay.
very well built car, if you dont like it or cant afford it, do yourself a favour and spend your time elsewhere

It's not about jealousy, I give credit where it's due but the fact remains that every $&#$% out there now thinks they are driftahs and even though the "get a rota" crew is still around there is still an over abundance of scum giving motorsport/drifting a bad name.

I've taught a lot of people in my time as a music teacher and have seen the best and worst of society in the relatively small microcosm that is Northland (Whangarei etc) and the truth is, I hate been associated with $&#$% that can't read or write or speak coherently.

Slippage.

As for the car, everyone has an opinion.
I'm allowed to think a car is ugly, tbh.. I'm ugly :(

This thread is about "one nice ae86" in a discussion forum, discussion is good, opinions are good.

Gary's AE86:
Mean motor (132kw at wheels!! NA), all the sus and interior bits you could want. It's been built from the ground up with excellent attention to detail. Even with sponsorship or cheap sources, most would struggle to put anything together like this, or close to it.

RS13: You own a cefiro?... going by your signature?... why would you pick such a lifeless bucket, are you taxi driver? Do you want to be like one of your friends the DRIFTAHS!?

Akane: You paid $3500 for an AE85.... that has a sohc carb motor, weak brakes, weak diff, weak gearbox... it may have aircon that needs gassing and it may be rusty. Do you watch the anime? Are you going to put turbo on that 3A??........ go Itsuki, go...!

Seriously, you guys are harassing a really well modified car but I bet you wouldn't harrass someone with a $15k toyota that has had paint and wheels put on it.
If you have driven a near standard car that's supposedly released to the public as a "sports car" and then driven gary's you would be disappointed with one of them..... the "sports car".
Mushy pedals, no feel from steering, sliding around on seats...

And for other fools posting about drifting. Drifter4ag said it right, all people on toyota forums do is talk about it. The nissan guys are going out there and doing it on a track. I wouldn't skid nissans, but that's besides the point. The nissan owners are out AT THE TRACK doing it.

As for drag racing and RX3's.... again, the rotary people are awesome at drag racing. Look how many show up to the 4 and rotary nats. OUT THERE DOING IT.

At the toyota vs honda drags, the majority of toyota cars are standard, or not far from it. The honda guys have B18C pistons in B16 blocks, mugen intakes, spoon vtec-eliminator cams, etc etc. PUTTING IN THE TIME AND MONEY.

At the toyota circuit days, you're not allowed to drift.
Catch my drift?

Don't whinge about someone putting in more effort and doing a better job than what you have/could do/done. Are you the same people who want to tax people who start their own businesses and who study hard and work hard to get well paying jobs?

freaking pussies the lot of you.

If you fit into any of the above categories of morons, don't buy Gary's car, because the majority of you can't handle it and have no class.

Again... i'm over it... and most of you.

Class?

It's all in the eye of the beholder.
Heavily modified cars aren't everybodies cup of tea dude.

Yeah it is an excellent example of what can be done and in all probability the cleanest modified 86 around... doesn't stop me thinking it's ugly. Then, who said form had to take precedence over function.

ok.

form over function you say:

1) suspension - trd springs and trd & koni shocks, rates suited for circuit, targa, etc.
2) engine - ~200hp at engine, non-turbo....
3) wheels - 8.5jj or so wide, lightweight.... good offset
4) bodykit - not outrageous - simple style - and function to suit above wheels with extra clearance for wheels in point 3
5) interior - 2 recaro bucket seats, otherwise minimalistic.
6) drivetrain - again no neons, just great flywheel/clutch combo, short shifter and trd lsd.

As you say, "cleanest modified car" - this is CLASS....

I really don't understand where you get "form over function" for this car.
The car is modified in traditional japanese/80's/ae86 style...

You want bad style or "bad form".... then go have a look at the 17" wielding 86's and other toyotas around.

why did you post?

I bought my car, because I prefer the handling characteristics of turbo rwd cars, nothing more, not because I aim to be a "driftah"! I much prefer the handling of my "lifeless bucket", compared to say, some rusty piece of shit Toyota with cutties and a locked diff! I gave those up when I was 18, when I realised that I wasn't a cheapass and could afford something with a bit more style!

Anyway.. your stereotyping, personal attacking and peurile posting is pathetic. I don't profess to be a drifter, I love driving my car equally as much on the track and street, this fixation with "everyone with a Cefiro or S13 is a drifter!" is just laughable, and shows how narrow-minded you are! Besides, I don't feel I have to validate myself as a turbo Cefiro owner, by going out on a track and impressing a bunch of 16yr olds with their caps on backwards, unlike some!

Just pathetic. Get over it huh? It would be a pretty $&#$% boring forum if all posts were the same old, go-with-the-grain shit, if you take it too personally, then you're an idiot.

I await your inevitably arrogant reply.. or better yet, if you wish to make it personal, I'd appreciate it as PM. Cheers.

AE86's generally are benefiting from being popular. Going back years (I think 8 years?) I turned down an AE86 in good (no rust but tired paint) condition when it was offered to me for $1500. It just wasn't worth any more than that to me at the time, and my AE82 at the time was a $5000 car.

These things happen, and I have watched early RX7's do the same thing, from when they were a $19,000 car all the way down to about a $3k car, and now they are on their way back up again.

I'd hate to think how much the owner of the AE86 paid for all the stuff he's done to it. I'd bet it will be less than half of what it would recover.

funny how in a field of 60 cars where 55 of them are nissan those rusted out piece of shit toyotas qualify in every round enter and regularly top 8 :P

To make assumptions that the toyotas run just cutties and a locker shows how stupid and uneducated you are :P 2003 justin in his awesome handling cefiro ran cutties and a locker :P get your facts straight ...

The "rusty toyotas" are running transplanted diffs where the best option to suit the chassis and suspension setup in that case is a locker ... lockers made by diff shops for track use only ..

tut tut ... when you top 8 or even make a round ill give you some cred .. but pretty much everything you say is spouted from a magazine or internet .. unfortunate but it shows ..

tell me my grammar is good puhlease

whatever rs13... laurel is a bucket compared to corolla/86, so don't go spouting some superior chassis crap to me.
turbo rwd...... pfft... sigma was turbo rwd and it was shit.
see more re my earlier examples of production cars.

When my stereotyping seems to prevail at any kind of motorsport event.. is it really stereotyping?

I don't need to pm you, I'm happy sorting you out on this forum.
