What should be replaced????

Postby 20v_rollaboy » Mon Apr 17, 2006 1:37 am

Hey there guys, looking at doing a freshen up on my engine. Just would like to know what would be good to replace and if it would be easier to do with engine out or left in?

Things Im looking at so far are:

VVt Pulley (Its kicked the bucket  )
Head Gasket
Plugs
Leads (maybe)
Dizzy Cap
Water Pump
New oil and filter of course
Power Steering belts
Oil seal round rocker cover

Anything else??

And engine is a 20v Silvertop

Thanks guys :)

cambelt

i wouldn't worry bout the head gasket unless you are taking the head off for some other reason

Cam/crank shafts oil seals. again there is no need to replace head gasket (unless it is blown), as to do it properly you will need to machine the surfaces . BTW your high idle problem maybe due to fact that VVT pulley is jammed..
Also don't bother getting fancy plugs or leads, as stock ones (genuine) works the best. (Mr Revhead can do you a good deal on all of the bits)..

If the head is fine leave the gasket, unless you want to go metal.

Do dizzy rotor as well
redo shims (if its noisey)

depends on your budget and level of ability really. if you are pulling it out of the car do the crank seals for sure.. the extra $20 spent now is worth it. and personally it's much nicer working on an engine stand than reaching down between the end of the motor and the chassis trying to get that cambelt on.

i've just done a complete rebuild on a silvertop
Head bolts ~$30 (revhead)
Head set ~$100 (Revhead)
Waterpump~ 80 (Revhead)
Cambelt ~$30 (revhead)
tensioner - cant remember
ACL race bearings big ends and mains $160
Rings $100
ACL conversion set (oil pump gasket, rear seal cover gasket, crank seals etc) about $35
Machining - valve seats, block honed and head skimmed 30 thou $(too much)
Spare shims for reshimming valves - $1 pinch-a-part entry fee
and lots and lots of time.

Ok so maybe I wont replace the head gasket

And I have a new fuel filter for it. I am using iridiums at the moment so I`ll just buy some new ones. Cambelt was replaced last month so no need for that.

To replace the crank seals do I just have to take the sump off and the oil pump??

Gearbox is coming off as its being replaced with a GT one. Im still using the box off the "fe and its crunching a bit.

Should I bother doing anything to the head? Like replacing anything?

And I will be doing this myself, as I think Im more than capable :)

Thanks for any help guys

The front crank shaft seal is behind the cambelt sproket, there is no need to take off oil pump or sum.

Mr Revhead, how much is a new oil pump?

Reason I ask is that my oil light comes on for about 10s when I first start the car, but after that its sweet.

Also should I be looking at replacing the thermostat?

That could be your bearings dude, probably wouldn't be a bad idea to do those too, not so hard. Shouldn't cost more than $100 last car we did was a 323 was something like $90 from BNT for mains and bigends.

There might be another reason for the light though

Last month when I replaced my cambelt, I cracked my oil pump housing trying to undo the tensioner bolt. So it was replaced my a 2nd hand one I had because I needed the car the next day. So anyway theres this pipe that goes up into the block and it needed a gasket which I ddnt have, so I had to put the old gasket back which was pretty knackered.

This might be the reason Im loosing oil pressure???

might be a broken anti-drainback valve in the oil filter. It happens.

Na not that one, this one is in the sump. I think it might be the return or main oil feed
