Help With Celica GT4 ST185 1993 idling when cold issues

Postby Norty » Sat Apr 22, 2006 8:10 am

i am having an
issue with idling when cold, What happens is when i start it up, the
idle will sit at about 1200rpm but then drop to maybe 400-500rpm cough
around that rev range then raise again to about 1000-1200prm then drop
back down, time it spends in these rev ranges can be random, applying
gas is ok, doesn't stall or anything. Sometimes when idling around 400-
500rpm it will stall. Once the car gets warmed up to running temp it
sits at about 800rpm and runs fine. Anyone have any ideas, i was
wondering if it was a funny cold start injector. Has anyone had this
same issue or could help? i was thinking maybe a vacum hose but dont seen to see any leaks or missing hoses. When it is idling at 1200rpm Vac on the boost gauge sits at 20 but when it drops to 500rpm the needle shakes around 10, all only happens when cold, if i give it gas and keep the revs up its all fine does not miss or nothing, Also Checked Computer faults and telling me its all runnning fine.

Spark Plugs are gapped 0.8 and are brand new, distrubtor cap is brand new
tested all leads and coil with mutlimeter and all tested OK

Timing has be checked only the day before all fine

Head is brand new, cooling system is brand new.

I had the exact same problem on my 185 before the engine swap. Does yours have a boost controller or fuel computer by any chance? How much boost you putting through it, and is it on the standard CT26?

It's a ct26 turbo, running about 10-12psi i think its overboosting personally. do you know what hoses to check turbo wise? No extras just standard computer.

Bruce you welcome to come over if you want :P

Do you know why its boosting that high? Has the exhaust been modified at all? Downpipe? If the car is standard it should be boosting to around 8 or 9psi tops.

I wouldn't be much help if I came over, I didn't actually manage to fix the problem on my one ;) Has your engine had a leak down or compression test done on it?

HEH got it, off the actuator the pipe was not connected around the back of the injection system where the t-vis and that blue thingy is.

Cheers Bruce anyway

I always find the best way to fix 185 cold start issues is to use the "Top Gear" method. Jeremy demonstrated it well with a Toyota Hilux. Its guarinteed to fix any ST185.
