In fact, I can do better than that, just talked to my mum's boss, hopefully in a couple of days I will have a copy of the police speed training book, withh the direct line that says that you DO NOT have to be locked, just seen on the radar with a good tone (radar makes noises).

I will photocopy it and post it up here as soon as I get it.

(couldn't find it online anywhere)

My questions is this .... why wouldnt the unit they have on the dash automatically sense that I was over the limit and then somehow lock this reading as surely the police officer would need to take his hands off the wheel and press "lock" on the unit (which might I add is on the passenger side).

I was caught once doing 113 in a 100Km zone, the cop was going the opposite direction coming over a hill, as soon as he was in sight my detector went crazy and i slowed down (this is a matter of seconds). The cop pulled me over and showed me the speed I was doing (without me asking might I add). So I would not have thought that the unit needed him to hit 'lock' for him to have secured the reading of me within a few seconds.

Anyways like I said .... I'll write in and see what happens.

To start with they use a remote, so they can control it from anywhere in the car.

And if they had a stalker unit like I am talking about, and they are hte only ones I have ever seen a cop use (altho as I found out before, there are other types...) then you can not set it to auto lock, or if you can, the police are not taught to, and I have not seen any modes for that on it. (have played with them a fair bit).

And with your over the hill experience, he probably would have just hit lock the instant he heard a tone from the radar, maybe even before he accutly read it, on the chance that you were going over, if you were under, or 105 or something then he would just unlock it and carry on. Maybe?

So what is there to stop the police pulling you over and giving you a ticket for speeding at 105Km in a 50Km zone and taking your licence away from you just cause you have had a ticket in the past ?

Thats their job, whats to stop me from changing the pumps at caltex so you get 18l instead of 20l.

You probably wouldn't notice.

Its called trust, and unfortunly their is nothing you can do about it, except try through the courts, but unfortunly, like others had said, its a frekin uphill battle to win.

I suppose what I am asking is how can a police officer abuse his trust. There must be something, otherwise police officers can just start giving out tickets if they suspect something and without evidence ...

Means cop can walk up to you tommorrow and arrest you for assaulting Joe Bloggs .... cause he 'SAW' you do it. And even if you say you couldnt have and Joe didnt want to testify, the police rule over you because its their word against yours ....

Thats why they have to go through all their tests etc when they join, but yeah, in the end, there is nothing. The courts is the only thing, I guess though, if a cop REALLY wanted to get you, you can't do anything about it.

:(

Don't be bloody stupid, every NZ citizen has the right to prove there innocence, read the article B1NZ put up carefully and give it a go, the police do not have endless resources, chances are they will drop the charge rather than waste time and money going through the courts, and if you try what the article stated, you have nothing to lose

If you only you had a GPS in the car, like dad and I do.

Logs ya trips and speed etc etc etc.

Thus when cops tell you that you doing such and such, you kick up a stink and threaten them with court. Take the ticket and you see them in court. You win.

End of story.

Or a GPS tracking alarm like Snitch

Amazing the FUD that goes around.
B1NZ's post is one of the few in this thread that smacks of reality.

But did it occur to anyone that if you're exceeding the limit - even if you're 'within' or 'close to' the tolerance line - you should just admit liability?
Coz - funnily enough - you're guilty ???

It'd be different if the Cop was trying to pin you on something you weren't doing. Fines start at $30 for less than 10km/h over the limit - I have an idea that 10-19km over the limit is in the ballpark of $80 - you should regard these figures as 'the cost of exceeding the limit' and pay up.

Sure, its the cops word against yours and the onus is (should be?) on them to prove your offense. But if you know you were speeding, why not just simply have the balls to take it on the chin and learn from it?
