Agreed. 'Classic' cars differ geatly depending which circles you run in, which country you are in etc etc. There are so many variables. Make this into a poll and let democracy do the rest

IMO the 86 is a classic car because of its race history, its cult status and its ability to make people go 'WTF - a little hatch ripping up the track!?!?!?!' - because isnt that what a classic car is all about? Something with a story, a legacy. The 86 most definately meets these criteria, and then some.

I guess the only way this will be settled is if in 30 years people are still modding and racing these beasts...half of the toyspeed populus will be in tricked out nanna carts by then though

Yeah but which MX5; new or old?
which GTR; roll a dice
which WRX; need to roll 2 dice
which EVO; as above
which RX7?

There is only one AE86 build, trueno, levin, facelift aside. 4 years of production only.

Notice how the ones talking these cars up, are those who have owned/own/want to own one.. their mindset alone of which is the sole reason these rusty shitters are still alive and grossly overpriced.

Since when did the definition of a classic car have to do with price? Why are impala's, old mustangs, old jags etc. worth so much when I could buy a much newer, faster and comfortable car for a lot less money..?

They all have something called style, AE86 aint in quite the same league but it has classic line, hence why AE85s are worth so much for such a crappy car. The AE86 just isn't old enough and rare enough yet to be a true classic. Haters of the ae86 have no style or are jealous they would have to pay a lot to get one.

I would rate TE71 far ahead of AE86, simply because the AE86 is just another mass produced car. It was not a pioneering car in its field or even for Toyota. The TE71 GT had eveything the AE86 had except for the 4A, which is not all that advanced frome the 2T-GEU anyway (especially not in Blue Top form). The AE85 is just the cheap budget version.

that is the best freaking picture i have seen in a long time man .. awesome work digging that up ... AE86 freaking miles in the air along side a similarly placed TA45 ... and for the record the TA45 has sweet sweet running gear .. it a TE71 with a sweet sweet body :D

And this was said above which is one of the best statements ive seen on here in a while "Haters of the ae86 have no style or are jealous they would have to pay a lot to get one."

This is where it gets tricky, calling the AE86 a classic at this point in time is premature as far as I'm concerned. A lot of its popularity at this point IS due to a cartoon (even diehard AE86 fans have to accept that its had an impact), see where it sits in 5 or 10 years when drifting is left with the hard core fans rather than the large number of transients it currently has. Personally I would go the TE27 myself as well, I used the TE71 as an example as it is much closer to the AE86 in basic construction. I consider the KP6* Starlets a future classic as well, but not while every 16 year old with a job at Pizza Hut is buying them and throwing away the springs. A car needs to be well beyond the "buy it because its cheap and popular" phase and into the "trade my grandma to find an original one even if all my friends laugh at me" phase before it can even get close to being a classic.

some ppl think an austin a35 is a classic....

for me a japanese car cant really be a classic....
apart from the 2000gt..... they have no real character.

but as mentioned above.... its subjective.

cars like that are gonna only get more sought after theres only so many light rwd cars left in the country/world because they dont make them very often anymore... probably gonna get worse as fuel prices keep skyrocketing, soon it wont be economic to make any kind of sporting vehicle aprat from supercars because only the very rich will be able to run them.

WEEEEOOOOOOOOOWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEOOOOOOOWEEEEEEEEE

i dont really care what other people think, my ae85 was easier and cheaper to get hold of than an ae86/te71gt etc... and will provide a good base to have fun with, which is why MOST people buy the car...

Dont know if its going to be a classic, dont really care as I probably wont still own mine anyway, unless a 4age turbo is soo much fun that I never want to upgrade...

Just to talk about this, why do you feel a Japanesse car cant be a classic?? Im curisos to know..... Is it becasue they are far more advanced than that of Britsh and euro cars.......

I mean, if to become a classic car, it means you need to have crap engineering, bad design and constant oil leaks, then yeah I guess a japanesse car could never become a classic....

I know quite a few Classic car owners, that are buying Mx-5's, becasue they feel they are going to become a future classic....

Now a BDA, thats' a classic.

Now understand this, I see yor point of view of the Ae-86, I know this, because I feel the same way you do about BDA escorts...

In your mind what makes then so super special, its an escort....... escorts are rusty peices of crap, I know this, I work on them, they are british designed, which is bad start anyway. and the BDA motor, wow, cool, a motor that cost 13g to rebuild every 10,000ks

Theya re only classics for the very reason poeple who like Ae-86's consider them classics. cult following, rarity, and race history....

And also, there are very few 'Classic cars' that come under the FWD catogry of cars, most classics are rear wheel drive......granted this is due to modden technolgy now. the e15 turbo may have good race history, but it is a peice of crap, its front wheel drive, and has sweet stuff all cult following. My mate loves e15 turbos, hes had like 6 of them, and I would dought he would consider them a classic........

Do you realise how silly that sounds?

You're saying, that due to increased fuel prices, companies are going to stop making light weight sporty cars, with relatively economical small displacement engines?

If I'd be worried about anything becoming extinct, it's V10 luxobarge behemoths.

Even though there's a tendency for 'sporty' cars to be FWD, I think that as the sports car market becomes more concerned about fuel prices etc, sports cars will probably become MORE like how the AE86 was.
