Touchy Subject but, The AE86 Status

The only reason 86s are considered to be a classic is because of that $&#$% cartoon. They really haven't done anything that special when compared for example with a S13 Sylvia. It all comes back to that damn cartoon, that has massively pushed the value of the damn things up. If I was to take up drifting the AE86 is about the last car I'd start with considereing the prices these days.

Be that as it may, the AE86 has a place in history that would justify classic status. What you & I think doesn't matter. I can accept that. Is your ego too big to allow you to accept that too?

just my thoughts
take it or leave it

perhaps if you tried reading my posts instead of reguragataing the same bulshit you wouldnt have missed that

you yourself said in the big picture what you and i think dosent matter yet you still tri to say its a classic in a global sence

ill say it again for you because well obviously i have to

i have no issues on your opinion but dont keep tring to force it on me

I think to become a classic it needs to have some pedigree which stands the test of time, for VW beetle it was being the peoples car and the pure popularity of it and flat 4 engine sound etc, for the Porsche 911 its being an affordable super car and having a design thats remained very similar for over 40 years. These attributes make a classic, not a car 20 years old which has only recently become popluar because of drifting and Initial D. It may be that in 10-20 years time we may look back and see it has the car which is most recognised as being "the" drift car, but till then, it is not a classic, likey one in the making though. This commentary is not to take away from the car and its appeal, it just needs to be put into context.

Lol @ this discussion

The car was pretty much a mass produced generic car but it's part of a legacy (corolla/sprinter) that is still very much alive. It has a massive fan base and is much loved by most Toyota "enthusiasts".

It is a classic to me and whether or not you think some fugly porsche 944 is more worthy is beside the point... it's just an opinion same as mine.

Nah, but the SW20 will be ;)

For all those that say the AE86 has done nothing, you're either too young, or have very short memories. It dominated it's class at Bathurst and the Wellington street races in the days before V8 supertaxis took over and ruined touring car racing.

What makes a classic isn't always determined by popularity, that's what makes a cult car. Cult cars usually turn into classics though.

What!? The AE86's got cleaned up by FXGTs! Which is more due to the fact that they had more horsepower..

When, not in 1985 & 86 when the AE86 won both times. They also would have won in 1987 if they didn't crash :(

Also forgot to add their total dominance of the ETCC from 1984-1987.

race wins add heratage
but i still wannna know how it changed the world like so many other non personal classics

i mean the vw bought cheap cars to teh masses liek that stupid 3 wheeled thing

i mean the gtr skyline did very well for a number of years but i doubt people will ever call that a classic
and thats only 5 years younger

i dunno if i was gunna get al worked up over a car it would be something specal

like a f40

Hahaha!

So, summing up.. after 7 pages of argument, it would appear that:

The AE86 is a CULT classic, not a classic in general, much like any car could be a classic, to the right person;

Wayne needs a dictionary;

European cars are better than Japanese cars;

Secretly, we all love BDA Escorts;

Initial D is yesterdays' news, and may or may not have anything to do with the price of AE85/AE86s;

And it only took 7 pages of shit-talking to get there! :)
