Petrol Tax

Is petrol tax a fixed percentage of the total cost of petrol? If it is, the government is making a steal.
At the current price for premium of $1.759/litre, the government is making 76.7 cents for every litre you put in.

Back in Feb, 2003, petrol was $1.179 for premium Sited here:http://www.bp.co.nz/bin/press/item.pl?id=1044235129&showarchive=yes. The government would then have been making 51.4 cents from every litre of petrol you put in.

But if petrol was a fixed tax, rather than rising and falling with fuel prices, and we were to pay 51.4 cents (just for example) tax on our petrol today, we would be paying $1.506/litre(approx). I'm sure our budget surplusses for the last few years could cope.

Now, the interesting thing with this is that we are paying more tax for less milage. As prices rise, and therefore tax, we get less petrol for our buck, threfore can do less milage in our cars. But the government has collected more tax, even though we can't go as far. Therefore NZs roads should have less damage to them because people can't go as far, therefore the tax shouldn't be needed. But does it drop?

Exactally. Apathy is what lets them keep ripping us off. Of course a lot of us wonder what we can do, there isn't an easy way round this one like a boycot or something.

Bigger and better thigns to deal with in life. And no,anyone that even thought that boycots would work is a damn fool. Concidering we equate to about .001% of the worlds fuel useage. Do you really think BP etc owuld care if they had to ship it to china or the USA insted of us. Oh noes

yeah it used to be fixed tax on petrol, but now mr "im always right" cullen decide he actually couldnt afford any of his so called affordable plans & linked tax to inflation, i.e every 3 years the tax will be inflation adjusted ( an approx of an increase of 9% every 3 years) & its also a % of price for most of the tax rather than just all being fixed, think the licence tax is still fixed at a set level per litre.

If you want to bitch about it write mr cullen a letter, he wont give a toss, but it might make u feel better :D

Just dont threaten him, the diplomatic protection squad dont like these sort of things to happen for some odd reason. :?

If you actually read my post I said a boycot _wont_ work.
I public forum actually seems like a reasonable place to discuss this.

I wish national had gotten into power, it would have been nice to see what they would have done. Brash did suggest that they would consider adjusting the taxation on fuel as prices changed. At least he entertained the idea.

have to agree. even if it was a different govt, petrol would be little different in price imo. Brash talked about a temp drop in the extra 5c put on when it was discussed around election time- 5c is bugger all on the prices now anyway. Not to worry, I forsee our dollar dropping in value and petrol being over $2 in the not to distant future. If anyone can do anything about it, go for it...but I dont expect anyone will...

The passionate march on government, the foolish talk of action, the hopeful listen to the foolish and the wise ignore the former and make friends with the enemy.

I don’t know why, but that quote came to mind when I read this thread… do what you will with that piece of random.

Yeah it sucks having such a large percentage of the price of petrol being made up of taxes but I'm actually more annoyed that a goodly percentage of it is going into the govt slush fund rather than being spent on roads/public transport/driver education.

I was reading an article from the Sydney Morning Herald earlier today (http://www.drive.com.au/Editorial/ArticleDetail.aspx?articleID=11582&vf=12) where they were discussing how petrol in Australia was still relatively cheap compared to other countries. Here's the chart with the article:

(remember, all values are in AUD)

Yep, there's little ol' NZ in the bottom half of the table!

Probably because they're the 5th largest oil exporting country in the world ;)

From the article:
in the South American country of Venezuela – which also produces its own oil – the price of petrol has been frozen at 5cpl. In the 1980s riots caused by the proposed reduction in Venezuelan fuel subsidies resulted in numerous deaths.

So we should go on riots and kill people and maybe THEN we'll get cheaper gas??

Sounds good to me

The fuel companies are the ones to blame for excessive petrol prices, sure the govt takes a fair whack but they aren't having record years for profit are they...

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/story ... d=10122731

In theory, if they have to pay more for fuel then pass those extra expenses on to us shouldn't they have pretty much zero growth? I think they is just making sun while the hay shines.

Damn, I was hoping you were serious. I wouldn't mind busting a few skulls for cheap gas.

And about Venasuala - I had no idea that they produced oil. You learn something new every day :D
