Help!? Exhaust problems

Postby jiranz5 » Tue May 09, 2006 1:27 pm

Here's the story, I was driving between Otemata and Omarama during that period of bad weather (with all the flooding, and snowing and stuff) when i came across a slip on the road heading around a blind corner. I did the best a could to avoid it but there was one large rock in the middle of the road which all I could do was centre on and hold my breath. Turns out it was the best decision I made. If i had been a little bit either side of the exhaust it would have done serious engine damage i.e. taken out the sump.

Anyway, having changed the rear right tire to the yellow spacer in the cold wind and rain (it's amazing what you can do when disaster strikes) with my bad heart and all, i limped the car the rest of the way to Omarama. Having arrived there at 7:30am (before the lindas pass was officially declared closed on the radio by the way) I had to wait till 8:00am for the local mechanic/tyre guy to arrive. 8:15am :) the guy arrived and had a look at my car, patched it up enough to get me back to Waimate ($70 for a second hand tyre and some glue on the exhaust).

I later took the car to Magloo mufflers in Timaru. After a closer inspection, this is what they found:

1. The pipework at the 90 degree bend has been crushed and also crushed just before the flexi joint.

2. The flange connecting the exhaust pipe to the manifold has been badly bent and needs replacing (twisted from the impact further down the pipe).

3. There is a crack in the weld joint along the centre muffler thingy which needs fixing.

4. And the 2 1/4 piping system from the cat back (came with this from Japan) is rotted out ALONG THE TOP of the piping. 8O

Magloo mufflers told me that by the time the patched it up I'd be looking at an almost complete custom (apparently they can't get parts for my car) exhaust system, to which they quoted me $1200. 8O

Alternatively, they could fix the front section (manifold to cat) with flows for $450. 8O

Here's my situation, I'm 20 years of age, only just started work after having been at Polytech for the last two years, have been diagnosed with a serious heart condition, and am saving hard out for the latter to cover travel costs and the like. In summary, I need an expensive job done for very little $$$.

I'm coming indo Dunedin on the 19th of May for another :? Hospital appointment and thought I might have a look around.

err.... any suggestions? :?:

Which brother? Rumour has it Aaron's isn't worth much at the moment, I'd rather take my chances with open heart surgery than steal Tim's, and the other brother is MIA in Palmy North somewhere. And I'm only allowed to steal mum's celica while mine's getting fixed :?

It's blowing ALOT of smoke at the moment. Something to do with driving it too hard while it's still cold...

Yeah, I noticed this about his a car a while ago, and queried what he had been doing to the poor thing! Its a pretty mean car, but he dealt it a sound thrashing.... blows the blues alot these days...

:(

my sisters FX-GTV is doing the same lately, she gives the 16v 4AGE death....

Thanks, will do. Probably give him a call to let them know when I'm coming and all.

The difference is that the FX-GTV will keep going while blowing smoke, the mazda won't last much longer...after all it is a "Mazda Sport Coupe"

Ok, had part of my exhaust done last friday thanks to Pit Stop on Hillside Rd :). 290+GST for new headers and 2 1/2 pipework up to the flexi joint. I gave them the car @ 8 in the morning and they had it all finished by 6pm that evening. That's at least got my car running quietly and efficiently again. They've quoted me $750 to finishe the rest of the exhaust in a 2 1/2 inch system (pipework, 2 bullets, muffler, and time) plus $50 to fix the holes in the floor pan at the same time. Oh well, I've got 5 months till my next warrant. I'll probably be in hospital by then anyway.
