Just hit a telephone pole head on...

Postby FXGTV » Thu May 11, 2006 7:09 pm

I hate FWD!!! Comming around a 90 degree corner at 35km the back of my car stepped out, i tried to correct only to be whipped head on into a pole. Pole snapped in three, i came out without a scratch but my rolla wasn't so lucky...there is now a dent right in the middle of the licence plate. Radiators is obviously rooted, not sure about rest just yet.

Still shaking while writing this...damn that was freaky!

edit : phone went dead just as the accident happened so no chance of photos.

You would if you saw the corner...its a death trap. The people in the houses near where it happened said so many people do the same thing and i was just unlucky to hit something. Taking that corner at 50 would be suicide.

Pine Av - In Upper Hutt. The turn off to Upper Hutt from river road after Totara park heads into a roundabout. If you go left theres a corner that turns shaply and heads towards the city centre. Thats the corner it happened on.
Cops are going to try and say i was speeding. (the cop who took me home said it didnt look good because the pole snapped in 3 places. The pole was crappy pine though so not exactly hard to break). Thing is i have no injuries at all, and if i was speeding and hit a pole i would have been owned.

Yea the old poles snap easy as, I work for a lines company and a half decent tap and they fall, wires normally hold them up

I know the exact corner you're talking about man... lived in upper hutt for around 15 years and driven round that corner too many times to count. Yes it is sharp.. near on 90 degree's but its not thaaaaaaaat bad

but 35kph in any conditions (bar flooding and snow) will get you round there safely without issue... so you've got to be doing something truely special at that speed to hit something...

which direction were you travelling?

p.s. you dont have to be going very fast to do lots of damage..

Well maybe 35 is the wrong number. To be honest i dont really remember exacly what speed i was doing, but it was less than 50 :P
Yes the road was wet, and i fCuKd up big time. But that corner is still a death trap. The residents who came out when it happened were going on about how they knew it was going to happen, and that they had been lobbying the UH city council to get it acessed.

At least i pumped the brakes

If its a write off i should get around 2500 (3500-1000 excess)
Whats the deal with getting the write off back so i can part it out? Does it go to auction or something?

Gutted to hear it man, but it's good that you are unhurt. The roads were quite slippery last night.. if you weren't doing anything stupid then don't beat yourself up about it. People make mistakes.

Its only a death trap to those who dont know about it....

Buy back depends on the insurance company. Some will give you first option to buy it back at a fixed price. Otherwise it goes to auction and you have to bid with the rest of the monkeys. Some dont even give you first option, and it goes straight to damaged vehicle auctions.

Sometimes without even telling you about it THANKS INBROKE you mutherf$%#ers.

I know the corner as well dude. In fact, I've written a car off in upper hutt myself (though it was at much higher speed and far more amusing). If its the first rain you've had in ages, and you possibly were playing up a bit... I can see how you'd manage it.

Is this the corner that leads to umm, the street that has Noel leemings on the corner at the very end? And has that school on the right, and KFC/countdown/Mitre10/VideoEzy street on the left?

If it is, I see your "suicide at 50k" and raise you 10kph.
