5afe starting issue... (again)

Postby AE91Sprinter » Wed May 10, 2006 1:32 pm

Right.

My sprinter (5afe FWD) is difficult to start when cold or left for a long period.

This is what I have done.

Checked codes, was throwing some minor ones, throws none now.
reset tps
cleared throttle body bypass for high idle
reset idle
reset timing
replaced rotor + cap
replaced oil, filters (air, fuel, oil)
Checked and subbed HT leads
Changed plugs
checked battery, tested well. Cranking DMM reports 9.9v. Subbed another battery in (known good on a 7afe), same problems persist.
Car starts pretty easily when crash started, suggesting electrical fault.
Cleaned all earths, inc starter motor (god thats in a horrible place)

Now, the spark is fairly weak, I'm going to guess its the coil... valid enough assumption? common fault? I really dont have the cash to be throwing around at it if its not the problem...

How much should i expect to pay for a replacement disty?
How much should i expect an AE to charge to test it?

Other Q, anyone in dunedin have a 5AFE disty they wouldnt mind me borrowing for a day in a weekend (long shot, i know)

Cheers guys

regapped the plugs, made them a bit smaller, seems to start easier now, which i guess suggests the coil. Maybe.

any comments...?
