I think this has been asked before, and the anwer was elbow grease.. but here goes anyway.

The paintwork on the runabout car I just bought is red, and rather faded/fragile.

At some stage it has had a heavy duty cloth tape holding bits and pieces of trim together, instead of being repaired properly.

This has been removed (a long time ago), leaving unsightly 'gunk' behind. This gunk is about 0.5-1mm thick in places, and seems pretty rock solid.

Has anyone got any tips for removing it, so that I don't damage the paint?

Try some CRC, or go get some prepsol from a panel shop

if that doesnt work, I used some Meths sparingly to remove residue from my old factory toyota stickers

the aboves + desolvit (sp)another option.
I'd probably carefully pick at it then prepsol then wax.

Can prepsol be purchased from the likes of repco?

I have turps and meths.. also have some BAM which I might try.

Fingernails are getting a little weary heh..

prepsol, then if all else fails paint thinners get most crap off. just be carefull on your paint

I would never use Jiff on car paint, its pretty harsh.
lol, once, a now departed aunty used to clean the bird crap off her car with Jiff. It had been freshly painted...the surface got well $&#$% up, and got repainted again. then she got rear ended by some punk lol.

I just cleaned all the Hello Kitty stickers off my Charade this morning, (yeah yeah, I bought it off an asian..) I tried everything from window cleaner to cut'n polish, nothing worked, kinda just spread it out and made it worse!

I ended up just getting a bit of towelling, and rubbing the crap out of it.. and it worked! With pressure and friction comes heat, and this caused the adhesive to roll up into little clumps, came off mint!

I've used meths thousands of times for cleaning up glue from stickers/tape etc. Works a treat

citrus based cleaners work very well without compromising the paint.
