Changing rear AE86 axle

Postby beeker » Sat May 13, 2006 2:02 pm

I have 2x new axles for my Ae86 targa car. I'm changing them as preventative maintenance as the existing units are bound to be very old and I'm pumping out more torque than the original design intended for. ie I'm running a 4agze in it.

Is this hard ? Special Tools required ?

I've just read up the service manual, and it looks like I need to also fit new or transfer the bearings across. The bearing were only changed last year. It also talks about a Hot Oil Bath to get the bearing retainers expanded to fit onto the axle.

Does the manual over complicate the install or is this a little too tricky for someone with limited skill and tools ?

bearings are a press fit on the axles, using an oil bath will expand them enuf to slide over, if you are careful you can tap them on with a hammer and brass punch.

they can be very tight in the housings, so a decent puller is also required.
