Appropriate AFs for 3SGTE

Postby Wildcard » Tue May 16, 2006 4:40 pm

Looking for a bit of guidance here.

My AFs at peak power after my first tune are still in the high 10s at max rpm and 18psi. Most power tunes I have seen on the net for 3SGTEs are around 12:1. Considering I have water/meth injection accounting for 15% of the mixture at peak RPM and boost I would have assumed it was safe to lean my mixtures out to around 12:1.... thoughts?

If you are running water / meth injection you should be able to run leaner than 12:1. The water / meth cools down the valves when converting from a liquid to vapour. Fuel is rquired to cool, so given you have water / meh partly doing ths, you "should" be able to go more lean. You should not just get a figure off here and run with it though, go get it propely tuned on the dyno and work out where knock is and tune around that...

Quite correct and knock doesn't seem to be an issue around 12:1 territory. What I have at the moment is a very conservative tune. I'm more worried about other factors such as in cyl temps caused by leaning it out. I assume there is more to the decision process rather than watching knock and if possible - EGTs...

12:1 is not that lean at all. I targeted 12.5:1 in my old turbo. Obviously EGT is the thrid mportant parameter, the others being AF and knock. In a perfect world you would have an EGT in each runner and individual cylinder trim and a 3D map for your O2 / meth injection. You should also consider timing in the tune also, not just the AF's. Get it on the dyno man, you have too many parameters to ass dynp tune.

Ive just had a very basic tune myself. The dyno operater was quite suprised by the fact that it wanted to run rich. (less than 12:1). He siad that he had also tuned another 3sgte and the outcome was the same...The engine seemed to love being rich.

The leaner your AF, the more extreme you are, you should know this by now it's the 2nd time I told you :P

I would rather find out the proper AF you should be aiming, tune to that AF and raise your timing to knock instead.

But hey that's me, I'm not extreme so take what i say with a grain of salt :/
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.
