Tappit noise (I think)

Postby 20v_rollaboy » Thu May 18, 2006 12:11 am

When pulling off from standing still, or accelerating from a low gear, engine makes noise which I think is the tappets. Why is this?

Also I have just replaced my VVt pulley and Im sure ive set the timing right. Also Ive retarded the timing as much as it can go (pulling on leads) so I dont know how this would effect it.

Thanks for your help guys

Might pay to describe the noise and why you think it is tappets.

I would hazard a guess that it is infact your engine/gearbox mounts or the front exhaust mount. (Double check that the engine and gearbox mounts are tight, its never a bad thing to do)

Or a good old case of pinking in the 20v.. (you dont run it on 91 do you?)

hang on, retarded the timing how far? you did check with a timing light i hope.. with the terminals bridged?

Unfortunately I dont have a timing light.

Engine is always run on Ultimate. It might be pinging, sorry i dont know the right term for this. Its definately not engine mounts, I know what they sound like

why did you retard the timing as much as possible?
going by the fact it sounds like youv been randomly altering timing it could be pinging. and as it happens when u say it does it sounds like pinking. a rattling type noise

wont be tappets. as 4ages dont have them
could be valve clearances, but they dont often need altering unless its been apart.
could be vvt pulley.

His car clearly was detonating hard, it sounded like he put 91 in it, but he says other wise... I guess it pays to recheck cam timing, as retarding does not get anywhere. Unless he is running lean for some reason.

Just come to my place on saturday I will check your timing and other suff just to make sure you got everything right, have you fixed your water leak?
