re registering NZ new car

just had a thought, im pretty sure its the same as for an import, but i thought id ask

if you have an NZ new car, and the reg hasnt been paid for two years. this means it is de -reg, correct? now i know an import has to go through the uber-mega-wof, which sets you back round $400.

Now im pretty sure nz new is the same, and you have to go through the same checks, but i just thought id ask on here, and see if someone a little more enlightened than myself could share their knowledge :)

they have to go through complience to be re complied, and yeah $400 is around about the price you pay, perhaps plus 244 to reg the car for the "1st" time

yea its extra for registration, i was just wondering if the process was any different for NZ new :)

i would doubt the process is any diffent for a NZ new Vs. Japanese import.
why would it?? all the same rules apply.

yea i thought they would. i dunno, i was thinking technically its not an import, so was built to pass our specific standards?

i had no expectation of it being different, i was just curious

from the price i got from the local VTNZ, it seems to be cheaper to get it certed then re-vinned. fit some bigger wheels or a smaller steering wheel :wink:

I tried that argument. Didn't work. They have to be complied first. YMMV.

Compliance is all about checking the vehicle complies with build standards (no pillar rust, bearings OK etc). Low volume is more about where a car departs from those build standards (in the case of a production car).

worded slightly wrong on my behalf.
i was told to re-vin the shell, modify to the hilt, homologate cage, cert then comply. as MSNZ cover cage, seats, belts and a few extras, and cert covers suspension and motor, they both over-rule compliance requirements, which in this case would be lights, glass , brake operation and tyres.

Hey, in regards to this if i have a de-reg car and i want to reg it again will it have to pass frontal impact standards tho it has been reg in the country before?
i know if it imported then it has to but what about exisiting cars?
anyone know

No. If it hasn't been registered before then you are in trouble.

In regards to you frontal impact requirements, you would be far better off asking the compliance workshop, you will get the straight and correct answer from them. I have a shitload of paperwork from them and I can't find an answer to your question in any of it. As for the compliance requirements:

Vehicles which have a registration that has lapsed for a period of 1 year or more, and are first registered in New Zealand after 1st January 1991 require a compliance check


Standard costs: $360 for a passenger car, $395 for 4WD or other large vehicle

Then you have to pay first time registration of course.

Note that this is taken from Waikato Vehicle Compliance, and I have no idea if prices are standard around New Zealand.

Oh, and if your car has been reged in this country before, and was first reged before jan 1 1991, you only have to pay for rego, not for compliancing. If it hasn't been reged, regardless of age it will require compliance - AFAIK this is where the frontal impact laws might catch you out, it all depends on the car.
