Setup Q's for my cheap ass system :)

Postby Osiry » Mon May 29, 2006 12:55 am

Ok I'm lookin for a bit of help here..

I have decided I need a decent audio system in my car and while I have the rudimentary stuff sorted I just need a bit of technical help with setup.

Now being a poor poor student I am on a limited budget so here's what I have so far.

Bought a boxed Fusion Encounter 12" 400W off my mate for $100
Got some soundstream 6 by 9s (can't remember wattage)

222 Watt sony amp (The lil red one)
1400 Watt RMS Amp (Some sh!t import I got off a retailer on trademe)

So what I was thinking of doing is running the 6 by 9s off the 222 watt amp and pickin up another fusion 12" somewhere and running them both off the 1400 Watt amp.

Now I am thinking of gettin some decent 6" speakers for front doors and running them bridged from the headunit (good idea?)

Now I am not sure as to what is the best way to wire up the amps.. Can I run them both off the same power lead? and should I get RCA splitters? as I think my heady has only 1 pre out.

Any help appreciated (keepin in mind my limited budget heh). If I have made some ridiculous error please correct me as I am a bit of a noob.

Not many headunits like running bridged, i think some of the new pioneers can do it tho (dont take my word) I would buy some decent component speakers EDIT: and use the wee sony to power those, run the 6x9 off the headunit and the subs off the amp, i somehow doubt its 1400RMS tho, how much fuseing has it got?

i got a 800w pioneer boxed sub for 120 from parallel, had it for 2 years now, awesome sub. i think your mate ripped you.

i run a lanzar 800w amp on the sub too.

many ways of doing setups however, im sure someone will give you the info you need

Not many (if any) head units will let you run bridged mono outputs.

Seeing as you will have more than enough sub I would use the sony amp to run the front speakers.. assuming they are around 50w rms per channel(yeah, I know... assumption is the mother of all $&#$%).

As for the 6x9's... what car you got?

Well it's a 92 Galant, at the moment I have the 6 by 9's off the heady and they're soundin nice so maybe it'd be a good idea to leave them on there and have some more sound up front..

I'm not sure about the 1400 Watt amp as it hasn't arrived in the mail yet haha, it said 2800 watt max 4 channel and was from a proper distributor so here's hoping they aren't liars heh.

I'm mostly concerned about wiring up the 2 amps as I have never done this before..

What headunit have you got? Running 2 amps is easy, have a fuse at the battery > Boot> distro block> amps. Apprently its good practice to earth both amps at the same place and just loop the remote wire to the next amp and rcas either loop from one amp to the other or run a second set if your headunit supports it. Got a link to the amp you brought?

The heady I need to take out and have alook at, it's one of those Jonvy82 things on trademe i think.. Maybe the 04 model? not 100% sure. It plays DVD etc 45 x 4. I THINK it only has one preout.

Can I just have the one set of RCA's coming out and then split them to run to each amp?

So 200wrms x2, which will be fine for the fusions. I think the prefered method is looping between the amps with the rca's, this is assuming one of the amps has rca outputs as well as inputs, if not looping should work ok. Other option is that the sony will have high power inputs (funny square plus) so you could just run the speaker wires straight to the amp, via the high inputs then back out to the speakers again via the amped outputs :)

Won't it be 700W x 2 if it's 1400 Watt RMS? I think I'd rather use splitters and mount the Sony amp under my font seat or something. For easy accessibility. But I'll check if the Big amp has Output RCA's as well as Inputs.

It accualy says 1400W MAX. RMS is a bit diffrent. It says 50x4RMS or 200x2 RMS, which sounds about right for what you paid. To get an amp putting out something even close to 700RMS x 2 @ 4ohm would be over $1000 easy.

It say's this at the top but is it just a sales gimmick to get fools like me to buy it? Heh.

I just saw that it says "2 Ohms" and down the bottom it says "4 Ohms". Is this what ya talkin about?

Yes what you have posed there are max specs, if that was true it would be pulling 233A, see if it has fuseing for that

* Output Power Bridged (Max) :
1400 Watts Max (700 x 2 @ 4 ohms)
RMS
200w (RMS) 50 W X 4 @ 4 ohms
200W (RMS) 100W X 2 @ 4 ohms

Sorry its 200x2 @ 4 ohm which will still give you enough doof doof.
