He tells me,$800 - $900 for a new red-top engine :?

I went and saw a wrecker today, who was actually the wrecker my mechanic talked to about my car as the wrecker said my mechanic had rang him yesterday about an engine.

The wrecker told me $600 cash price 8O.

So it looks as though the mechanic has tryed to overprice me $200 grr..

And, on top of that, he said now hes unsure if the blocks stuffed and he wants to pull the engine apart to make sure. I don't particularly want to be charged a few hours labour to find out its stuffed.

So hopefully, if I could find someone to chuck in the engine as a perky for me , I might be able to get it back on the road for under a grand. Still weighing up pros and cons of a blacktop or a 4agze though..

cheers for the help guys

that would be his profit margin... time calling around etc... most places will mark stuff up by 50%

itll go like this......

wrecker quotes mech $750r plus gst. which = $850ish (your price)
trade discount is 20% so mechs cost is 600 plus gst. which is $675.

Its called "making a living".

That said, I'm sure a few of the wellington TS guys can help you swap the engines over in about... a night (if that!), if you ask them nicely. That way all you're paying is $700 for an engine, and a hundred or so for engine fluids etc, and pizza/beer for the guys who come give you a hand.

By far the cheapest option, and you'll learn a bit from it too. Pay the wrecker if you want - but this is a great (forced!) opportunity to essentially triple your mechanical knowledge - and then you get to pull the old engine apart yourself and learn a bit there too :D

And chances are you can sell off half the bits from your dud engine on here to recoup some costs (if they aren't bung).

Ok, found out the truth, I made a bit of an assumption and it was incorrect.

Yes, my mechanic did indeed ring that wrecker and did get the same price.
However, they were prepared to warranty the engine for 90 days, but they weren't prepared to reimburse the labour, if something went wrong.

The engine my mechanic talked about, is from a different wrecker, who is prepared to reimburse my mechanic for the labour, if their engine stuffs out. So really my mechanic was protecting my interests  ( wipes egg off face ).

However way I do it, I'm going to have to borrow some money to do it, so is it worth borrowing the extra to get the better engine? I am after a bit more performance lol, or is there things I could do to the new engine before I put it into the car to make it a bit sweeter?

Anyone in Welly keen for a perky? lol.

Do you have extractors for it? If not, get a set and slap them on before you drop it in...though that said, its probably just as easy to do it with motor in place.
With the limited budget you've got, there isnt really alot you can do to make it go better...just do all the timing stuff, seals and waterpump while its out.

If you get all the bits i will come help you/do it for you. Have done several engine swaps (and am about to do another of my own  )

Easily done in a day max if you have the right gear and parts

That doesnt sound too bad.

Was that installed or just the motor from the mechanic?

Also its probably a good idea to open it up and check the condition, doesnt take long and could save a lot of hassel and $

Yeah 1998, mechanics gonna rip her open tommorow and have a good look, hopefully, just hopefully, we might get away with just a stuffed headgasket.

Didn't really want to pay the mechanic to rip it open and tell me the engines rooted, but I guess in the end it could save me money.
