4age waterpump fwd vs rwd compatibility

Post by l1ttle_d3vil »

I currently have a fwd waterpump on my 4age/ke35 with the thermostat set up in completely the wrong place etc etc.
I've got a rwd waterpump housing, thermostat housing and lines but no rwd waterpump pulley.

can I use the rwd waterpump and thermostat housing, but keep my fwd waterpump and waterpump pulley? or will these parts not bolt together properly?

cheers.

Is the motor you are using originally from a FWD? and you are not using the viscous fan? if so use the rwd waterpump rear housing and bolt that to the fwd front housing, bolts together no problems.

yeap they will go together no probs. But if your front cover starts leaking in future must replace with another FWD unit.

the rwd front are differnt and stick out further due to the viscous fan

So when i was thinking of proactively changing the water pump in my 4agze (ae101) powered AE86, and I thought it was as simple as getting a new AE101 water pump, i was wrong ?

yea, the engine was originally a fwd converted to rwd.

are all fwd bluetop waterpumps the same then? I don't know exactly what mine is out of, so would one out of an ae82 bluetop do the trick?

beeker: that depends if the waterlines in your ae86 had been converted to rwd everything or if you were still running the fwd pump and pulley etc.

is it a common problem with these leaking?
the whole reason im changing my waterlines is because my waterpump started leaking on my way to taupo on the weekend so i've got to pull the pump etc off to check it all out and may aswell set it up correctly while its all apart.

from what i can see so far its just leaking from the top of the waterpump somewhere; is it just a seal thats gone or something?

and im using an electric fan, so the fan on the waterpump doesn't matter.

rwd waterpump has longer snout, but with more offset (+ve like wheels) pulley.

fwd waterpump has shorter snout, and more flush offset pulley.

so as long as you match pulley to pump the belt will be in line.
