I think the font is slightly smaller

I mustn't get out much, I've only noticed one of these new plates. When I bought my car in February I was the 1st official NZ owner so the car yard had held off registering it til I bought it. I just missed out on getting the new "fancy" plates by about one month (bought it early Feb). Oh well, I'm sure I'll get over it.

All plates, General Purpose, Personalised and Trade plates manufactured from 1 March 2006 will have the new plate character font with the plate series starting DFN

font is very similar to aussie plates it seems
