im sure anything adjustable and didnt come with the car when it entered NZ you will have to get a cert. I'd like to see you try get a wof with trd adjusties :D

Interesting...
my mate got his trd ones and had to be certed, we asked Neil Fraser about the TRD thing it but he said no cos its actually not a standard part for the car its an upgrade option or something.. but if you can get away with it why not :D

Warwick, I'm not doubting the efforts you've gone to and the answers you claim to have received from certifiers and someone in the LTSA.

The fact is that most certifiers will demand a cert for adjustable suspension, even TRD, whether rightly or wrongly.

Whether they are right or wrong can be a matter of interpretation and it depends entirely on which side of the fence one wants to sit on which interpretation one finds acceptable.

I believe I could write a compelling argument for either interpretation and present it to achieve an answer from an LTSA staffer in support of whichever one I wanted.

However that doesn't guarantee universal acceptance from LTSA management and until that is available in written form I'd factor the cost of a cert into any coil over purchase.

I think the main arguement around OE equipment for certification is that by supplying a product to fit that car, the original manufacturer has deemed the car safe with that product fitted. Afterall the key point of certification is safety. If Toyota says here is a set of coilovers to fit your specific car, then that part must be safe to use on that vehicle unless sold as race only. Therefore the purpose of certification is already covered off by Toyota.
The problem is (as others have pointed out) interpretation of OE. Now the problem arises when you run into someone who doesn't agree with you rather than someone who does. My approach would be to get it IN WRITING from LTSA before you spend your $$$ and then WoF inspectors or police officers cannot dispute it since LTSA sets and enforces the regulations. If they say yes then no one further down the chain can disagree. But if you are getting the car certified for other items anyway then you would be an idiot not to include the coilovers in the cert.

real world examples within the last 3 months:

TRD sub frame connectors
TRD braided brake lines
TRD brake kit

all parts that if from another maker need cert and in these cases did not as the were genuine TRD.

yes i agree you will find ppl who say no, and i agree its due to the rules being so open to interpretation.
however when you gather the correct info and present it you wont have an issue

TRD MAN well put.

Another thing is just because TRD designed a set of coil overs for your car doesn't mean that they where intended for road use either. This form of suspension is designed for racing. So thats probably where the LTSA is coming from

My ae111 has trd adjustables with no cert and i went for a warrent a couple of weeks ago and no hasstles...but we will have to see until nextime.
