Tyres for Caldina GT-T

Hey,

I am getting new tyres for the Caldina GT-T, as they are like 2mm at the moment.
They are 205/50/16" mags.
I have been looking at the Goodyear Eagle F1, the Federal 535, the Dunlop Direzza DZ101, and the Bridgestone MYO1.

Not limited to these models at all, I really need some help deciding which ones to get. If you know of some good tyres for the Caldina, please let me know. I have HRT sourcing me the tyres.

I want a good gripy tyre, that is QUIET!, but I want it to have a good life too. I have been told the Direzza's dont last that well, but are really grippy. I have also been told the Federal's are a good all round all season tyre that are quite grippy and last well. Are the Eagle F1's all season, or summer only, and do they last well? I havent heard anything about the MYO1 but they are priced just below the F1's.

If anyone can give me info, or has a particular tyre they swear by that would be great for my GT-T, please let me know. I have only brought tyres for a small hatch, that I had for 4 years, with only 1 set of tyres, so I dont know what is good/bad or otherwise.

Can't really go wrong with the Goodyear GS-D3s. Have a set of these on my 4 and am more than happy with the grip and low noise levels.

We have Goodyear Eagle F1's - They handle wet and dry conditions very well, don't really notice any road noise (might be because I like my music loud ) but yeah we haven't had any problems with them - we also used Eagle F1's on our subarus, so have stuck with them over the years

I got a vote for the direzza 101's.

I had them on the front of my 4agte ae101, and I got 35,000 km's out of them (not slow driving...).

Im about to go in next week and get all 4 changed to new direzza's.

And for $170 a wheel, can't go wrong

I paid $200 a tyre for 205 / 16 / 50 & $209 for 25/ 16 / 50 Goodyear DS-G3's not including fitting. Shop around - I don't have a lot of experience with tyres but i'm happy with my purchase.

No idea about these tyres, anyone heard of them before?

I like the sound of the F1's, but what sort of km's do you get out of a set?

I have read quite a few reviews on the Eagle F1's, and they are rated pretty high.

Have you ever got a wheel going, or lost grip at any stage with them?
Have you ever driven in icy conditions with them?

oh another question I had was tyre sizes.

Currently car has 205/50/16's.
What difference would a 205/55 or a 205/45 have? I know the 2nd number is a percentage, or a fraction of some kind, to make up the height or sidewall height of the tyre... but what difference would 5 make on handling etc? Why do tyre manufacturers make such small changes in height - it must do something?

percentage gives you your height if you wanted a wider tyre you go to a smaller % sidewall so it dont effect your gearing or rub on guards etc

it wont make much difference in this case. They do it to suit different vehical types depending on there needs.

It helps you calculate wheel size and tyre size, based on what the standard is for your car, so your speedo isn't incorrect when you put new rims, or tyres on.

Found out that my car is 205/60/R15 Standard.
My current tyres are 205/50/R16.

At 100km/h, my speed is actually 102.55km/h, which is pretty good. The recommended tyre size though is 215/50/R16, according to the chart on that page. So what I currently have is 10mm skinnier than what is recommended. Ah well, what can ya do. Should be fine.

I have been told the Federal 535's are great value for money, and the price doesnt reflect how good they are. Has anyone had any of these before? they are about $135 each tyre, compared to the $190ish for the GS-D3 Eagle F1's.

My mate has them on this VRZ pulsar, and said they are great, but that is a small car in comparison...

How wide a tyre can I go on the rim. 205/50/16.... can I put a 215 on the same rim, or is that just a no go area.

My old pulsar had wider tyres on the standard rim, and had no probs at all.

Ours are 215/45/17, and yep I am for real - lasts us about two years worth of travel (lots of gravel trips/long distance/town driving-no snow yet, hopefully this year!), as long as you keep the alignment etc up to scratch you can't go wrong

As for loosing grip/wheel spins - if you push it hard enough (in the wet) around a round-about you can loose traction Can't manage to get it to do that in the dry tho
We have spent a bit on our suspension so that probably helps the tyres to do their job better
