Building a 4AGZE exhaust system, good flow but low noise

Postby Rick » Tue Jun 13, 2006 6:33 pm

Iam starting to look at an exhaust system for my AE-85 which has a 4AGZE in it. Iam wanting a good flowing exhaust but with minimal noise, I dont want any raspy sounding exhaust. I already have extractors on it, which I have welded on a 2.25 flange on it, but is that a bit on the small side? Do I need to jump up to 2.5inch?

Can some point me in the right direction and recommend the types of mufflers, good brands etc.. which would be a great help.

use a proper "turbo muffler" from an exhaust place... they sound mint... but you dont have the added magpie bait that people are after...
When in doubt, down and out.

I've generally avoided these things....

http://www.geocities.com/srsvengence/ts ... 81_pt1.pdf
http://www.geocities.com/srsvengence/ts ... 82_pt2.pdf
http://www.geocities.com/srsvengence/ts ... 83_pt3.pdf

This is a test done by Autospeed.com.au. I'll admit it's not the be all and end all.
But it does illustrate a few points.
Not all mufflers are the same.
Some of those "turbo" mufflers contain two dog leg turns which have an absolutely terrible flow rate, and some of those don't even do a good job at actually silencing the exhaust.

Check out the top five contenders in this test. The 2 inch Genie Tornado, not only flows more than a 2 inch pipe (obviously not actually 2 inch internally, but sold as a 2 inch) but is about the fifth best at noise reduction.

IMO.
If you want a good exhaust. Pick a pipe size. Then buy a cat, a resonator and a muffler that are at least a 1/4 inch bigger in diameter. Slap the bugger together and enjoy.
Make sure to pick components that actually are all straight through. If you can't see out the other side it ain't good enough.

Thats a pretty good rule of thumb. Id go with that too. Make sure you got clearence under your car too obviously, cos you dont want rusty holes in the bottom.

i wouldnt go to 2.5" unless going turbo later...
2.5" was fine for 3l turbo motor.....

i would use at least one straight through resonator half way down the exhaust and a super turbo style at the back.

Or super turbo half way down and cannon style at the rear..

hey

Even the exhaust on my fxgt isnt too bad, only 2" i think rps non straight through muffler at the back and straight through resonator in the middle

if you are out my way at some stage pop round and ill take you for a ride.

However the set up in the supra is far nicer and i actually played around with a couple of different resonator/muffler set ups

the super turbo muffler i got is from repco, and the straight through cannon style muffler is an action dan special.

You cant use what youve got? just modify it to go under the diff? How much clearnace between the floor and diff head have you got? Ive got about 15mm in the centre :( in my KE30 with Hilux rear, so just went under it, certainly not a bad option, especially if you already have a pre-made system.

als mufflers sell those non-bling turbo mufflers, as do most other exhaust places i guess. i got mine done there and its got a pretty nice sound imo, not too expensive either.
